Why it exists.
The beginning
Black Meridian arrived in 2025 from the atelier of Ensar Oud. The composition draws on two distinct oud sources: Borneo oud and Vietnamese oud resin. Black Meridian reads as a tightly constructed expression built around a small cast of materials that demand attention rather than offer easy charm. Borneo oud lends its character in the upper portion while Vietnamese oud resin anchors the foundation, creating a vertical structure where each ingredient has room to register clearly. The result is a fragrance that feels composed rather than layered, with weight distributed deliberately across the wearer's skin rather than concentrated in any single phase.
The note structure keeps the cast small: immortelle, two oud varieties, red jasmine, frankincense, and hyraceum. That restraint allows every material to register without interference. Hyraceum contributes an earthy warmth that grounds the composition, offering an animalic mineral counterpoint to the oud's depth. Immortelle brings a sweetness that balances the darker tones, its sugary warmth softening what would otherwise read as austere. Red jasmine adds a dense floral layer, rich and heady, weaving through the resinous and earthy elements.
The evolution
The opening announces itself with immortelle's curious sweetness, almost like burnt sugar crossed with dried herbs. It sits against a sharp, resinous edge from Borneo oud and the first thread of frankincense smoke. Red jasmine blooms quickly, adding a dense, slightly indolic floral presence that gives the first 30 minutes a candlelit, almost ceremonial quality. As the heart develops, the composition deepens. Hyraceum enters, and the animalic warmth begins to settle against the oud. The jasmine recedes but doesn't vanish. Vietnamese oud resin takes over the base, bringing a darker, more leathery character that slowly replaces the Borneo's brighter notes. The drydown is where this fragrance lives. Hyraceum and Vietnamese oud resin carry the final 4-5 hours, creating a close, warm, slightly dirty skin-like presence.

Black Meridian joins a catalog of releases from Ensar Oud that draw on rare natural ingredients, compositions that include iris, oud-centric attars, and agarwood-focused work. The fragrance sits alongside pieces like Iris Ghalia, Oud Yusuf, and Qi Nan, all built around the same commitment to material-driven perfumery.
