The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Emper released 50/50 in 2018, a Citrus Aromatic composition for men that reads less like a fragrance brief and more like a weather report. Bright, brisk, oceanic at the top, the name itself suggests a deliberate split: cool marine and aquatic notes against warm patchouli and spice, a meeting of two temperatures in the same bottle. The citrus opens with a clean, almost saline snap, the kind of brightness that makes the air around you feel a little cooler, while underneath, something denser and resinous is already gathering weight. As the first few minutes pass, the aquatic accord stretches out, carrying a damp, ozonic quality that mingles with the citrus zest and softens its edges.
What makes the structure interesting is the tension between the top and the heart. Bergamot and citrus open loud and unmistakable, the kind of brightness that announces itself in an elevator. Then the marine and aquatic notes arrive, but instead of staying cold and clinical, they immediately meet patchouli and spice, which ground them. The result is a scent that reads as fresh without being disposable, aromatic without leaning herbal. Most aquatic compositions stay cold to the last. This one heats up underneath.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are almost aggressively bright. Bergamot and citrus do their thing, sharp and clean, the kind of opening that cuts through a crowded room. There's a fleeting moment early on where the marine note tries to take over, washing the citrus in a cool, briny haze that softens the sharpness and adds a damp, ozonic quality to the composition. Don't panic. The patchouli is already working underneath, warm and earthy, and it starts to push back before long, threading its way through the marine accord with a chocolatey, root-like depth. The spice follows not far behind, arriving as a dry, papery heat that sits close to the skin without disappearing, adding a quiet warmth that anchors the fresher top notes. As the hours pass, the amber and woody base have fully taken over, and what's left is a warm, slightly sweet musky close that feels grounded and skin-like.
Cultural impact
50/50 sits in a category that doesn't get much critical attention: the aquatic-citrus hybrid built around contrast. It's the kind of fragrance that earns a spot in a rotation where versatility matters, something a wearer reaches for on a warm day when nothing else seems right. The composition pairs a clean, oceanic opening with a warmer base of patchouli and spice, and that contrast is what gives it a clear identity. Rather than chasing complexity for its own sake, 50/50 focuses on balance, letting the marine and citrus notes carry the opening hours before the earthy, slightly sweet base takes over. 50/50 doesn't try to be a statement piece.
