The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sun arrived in 2023 as Ellis Brooklyn's answer to a specific feeling, the afternoon in the sun that doesn't need to end. The brand's creative director Bee Shapiro has long spoken about translating everyday moments into scent, and Sun is the logical extension of that philosophy: not a place, but a quality of light. Perfumer Gabriela Chelariu built the composition around a citrus-fruity core that reads as joyful and unselfconscious, the olfactory equivalent of a beach party where nobody's trying too hard. The name says everything. This is a fragrance about warmth without agenda.
What makes Sun interesting is the way the heart notes prevent it from becoming just another bright citrus scent. Pear blossom and orange blossom water introduce a creamy floral quality that softens the citrus zing without killing it, a balance that takes real skill. The vanilla in the heart acts as a bridge, pulling the composition from sharp daytime freshness into something warmer and more wearable as hours pass. It's this tension between immediate brightness and eventual warmth that gives Sun its character.
The evolution
The opening arrives fast, clementine, lemon, and Italian mandarin orange hit together in a burst of citrus that feels like sun on skin. This phase is bright, almost effervescent, and lasts about 30 minutes before the florals begin to emerge. The heart transition is where Sun earns its name. Pear blossom and orange blossom water introduce a soft, creamy quality that feels like stepping into shade on a hot afternoon, relief without losing warmth. The vanilla keeps everything grounded here. By hour two, the drydown takes over. Cedarwood and musk create a skin-close warmth that lingers close to the body rather than projecting outward. The ambroxan adds a subtle depth that prevents the base from feeling linear. On most skin types, this phase carries the remaining 2-4 hours of wear.
Cultural impact
Sun earned New Beauty Magazine's 2024 Best Fragrance Body award, which speaks to how effectively it captures a specific mood, the warmth and playfulness of an afternoon in the sun. Ellis Brooklyn has built its reputation on approachable, everyday scents, and Sun fits that philosophy while offering enough complexity to stand out in a crowded citrus-floral category. It's the kind of fragrance that works without trying too hard, which is exactly the point.
