The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
XOXO arrived in 2018 from Edens Garden, the perfumers Charity Dykstra and Gras Martin composed for a creative space built around unexpected pairings. The name carries affection in shorthand. The composition carries it in a different language entirely. There's nothing syrupy about this scent. The damiana opening reads almost mineral, herbaceous and bright with a quiet lift that surprises on first contact. Clean, green, and unusually poised for something this soft. Then it takes its time finding warmth, easing back through spice before settling into its base. It rewards patience with a shape that keeps changing rather than declaring itself all at once.
What sets XOXO apart is restraint. Sandalwood and vanilla anchor the base, sure, but they're filtered through the same quiet logic that shapes the rest of the composition. The sweetness is real, but it never gets sticky. The cardamom, cinnamon, and clove at the heart provide warmth without leaning sentimental, a careful balance that keeps the gourmand impression soft rather than candied. It's a scent that knows exactly how much sugar it's wearing and stops just short of it. That's the trick: something that smells like an embrace without ever tipping into the obvious.
The evolution
The first 30 minutes belong to damiana on top, with its cool, almost translucent herbal snap, green and a little bitter. Cardamom arrives quickly and stays, threading warmth through that opening and giving it a quiet spice. Then the heart deepens: cinnamon softens the edges while clove adds a low, resinous hum, almost incense-adjacent, a little peppery in the best way. By the two-hour mark the woody base has claimed most of the composition. Sandalwood leads, rounded by vanilla that arrives like a held breath, just enough sweetness to catch at the collar. Coconut drifts in at the edges, creamy but never heavy. On fabric the next morning, you'll catch the sandalwood and vanilla still humming quietly, warm and close, almost like something dried in the sun.
Cultural impact
XOXO earns its place because it manages to feel both familiar and a little sideways. The damiana opening gives it a herbal brightness most woody-gourmand compositions skip, and the cardamom, cinnamon, and clove heart keeps the warmth from going too sweet or too sleepy. That mix of green and cozy makes it comfortable on first wear but interesting enough to keep coming back to. It doesn't demand the wearer's full attention, but it rewards revisits as the sandalwood, vanilla, and coconut base keeps revealing small shifts from hour to hour.
