The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
By Sand arrived in 2006, before Ebba Los Angeles would formally appear on the fragrance scene with its Miss collection. The fragrance is presented as a sunny blend of ginger tea, sweet gardenia, Thai lime, and creamy vanilla, a composition built to recreate a long day on a white sandy beach. That brief matters. By Sand isn't an abstract beach. It's a clear impression of white sand and open air, built around the contrast of bright citrus, warm spice, soft floral sweetness, and rounded vanilla. Ginger tea gives the composition its clean heat, Thai lime adds a lively brightness, and gardenia brings a creamy floral character. Creamy vanilla then settles underneath, giving the scent a plush base while allowing the fresher notes to remain distinct.
What makes the combination interesting is its refusal to stay in one lane. Ginger root and lime bring a sharp, slightly bitter edge. Gardenia introduces a dense white floral, almost waxy in its sweetness. Vanilla then pulls everything toward dessert. Three distinct pleasures, one composition. The accords tell the same story: citrus for lift, spicy ginger for heat, white floral for softness, and a lactonic sweetness that smooths the edges until the whole thing reads as cream rather than perfume.
The evolution
The opening lands bright and a little brittle. Lime cuts through the air, ginger arrives with clean heat, and gardenia floats up like something carried on the breeze. The composition feels alive, a little fizzy and sun-bleached. Then it settles. The sharpness of lime rounds off, ginger warms toward something closer to spiced tea, and gardenia turns creamier and fuller. What surprises is how much vanilla does in the second half. It doesn't read as a base note sitting underneath. It becomes the whole floor of the scent, soft and enveloping. As the beach glow fades, the fragrance moves into a warmer, more intimate register, with vanilla close to skin and a faint floral sweetness still hovering. It settles into a soft, milky drydown that lingers quietly rather than projecting. The lingering trail is where this one gets you.
Cultural impact
By Sand carries a clear Los Angeles sensibility: sunlit, sensual, and unapologetically sweet without being loud about it. Its combination of Thai lime, ginger tea, gardenia, and creamy vanilla gives the fragrance an identity grounded in contrast. Citrus brings the opening into focus, ginger adds warmth and structure, gardenia introduces a lush floral center, and vanilla gives the composition a soft, enveloping finish. That interplay makes By Sand easy to appreciate as a warm-weather scent while also giving it enough depth for close exploration.
