The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Calice Becker has a gift for making obvious things feel like discoveries. In 2010, Donna Karan's brief was deceptively simple: sugared apples. This was the DNA of the wider Delicious Candy Apple collection, three limited editions in red, violet, and green, each offered in a 50 ml Eau de Parfum format. Juicy Berry was the one that leaned into the berries underneath the caramel. The collection launched in February 2010, offering a burst of color and sugar for those who wanted something playful and inviting. Becker found the balance between confection and freshness, creating a scent that feels both sweet and alive, with the kind of immediacy that makes you lean in for another whiff.
The heart of this fragrance is the tincture of rose, an unusual choice for a fruity composition, and the detail that elevates Juicy Berry above the usual apple-flavored sweetness. Tincture of rose is rose petals steeped in alcohol, an extraction that captures the plant's aromatic essence in its most concentrated, slightly wine-like form. It gives the floral heart a depth that apple blossom alone couldn't carry. Where most fruity-florals soften into cotton, this one holds onto something with a little more weight. The sandalwood base does quiet work: it doesn't announce itself, but without it, the berries would float away entirely.
The evolution
The opening is immediate. Blackberry hits first, sharp, almost tart, the kind of blackberry that stains your fingertips. Red currant follows, lending a jammy quality that smooths the edges. The litchi is subtle, almost buried under the others, but it adds a watery freshness that keeps the top from reading as syrupy. The fruitiness then settles, and the composition shifts. The pear emerges more clearly, and the apple blossom arrives like a door opening into a sunlit room. The rose tincture doesn't announce itself, it sits in the background, giving the heart a faintly wine-like warmth that prevents the florals from going powdery. The sandalwood then takes over. This is the part worth paying attention to: the drydown isn't just a base. It's a different fragrance. The berries are gone. The florals have receded.
Cultural impact
The DKNY Delicious Candy Apple collection brought a playful energy to the fruity-gourmand category. Juicy Berry emphasized the tart berry notes underneath the candy shell, offering something that felt both sweet and grounded. The collection's three-color presentation appealed to the collectible instinct that was beginning to drive fragrance purchases beyond the traditional core demographic. The limited-edition approach gave each scent a sense of occasion, making them feel special without being inaccessible.
