The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Only One arrived in 2018 as a new chapter in the story that began with The One in 2006. Violaine Collas built this around a single tension, violet blossom against coffee. One delicate and powdery, the other dark and roasted. The violet brings its cool, slightly bitter floral quality, while the coffee offers a dark, roasted sweetness. Together they create something unexpected yet harmonious, a fragrance that balances brightness with depth, elegance with warmth.
The violet-coffee pairing is the structural bet. Violet brings its cool, slightly bitter floral quality. Coffee brings a dark, roasted sweetness that can easily overwhelm. Heliotrope adds an almost almond-like creaminess that rounds the violet and keeps the whole composition feeling cohesive, even intimate. The base supports the composition with warm, subtle woody nuances that prolong the dry-down, letting the violet remain present throughout the wear experience. The patchouli base adds an earthy depth that keeps the scent grounded and prevents it from becoming too sweet.
The evolution
The opening is fruity and bright. Freesia and pear arrive first, with bergamot adding a citrus spark. Violet doesn't disappear, it deepens, settling into the composition alongside the coffee and iris. The heart reads as one continuous note: warm, powdery, slightly bitter. No dramatic phases. Just a slow shift from bright to warm. The drydown brings amberwood, heliotrope, and patchouli together, creating a warm, powdery cushion that extends the violet's softness. Heliotrope adds an almost almond-like sweetness that rounds everything out. Patchouli keeps it grounded. The result lingers close to the skin through the afternoon and into the evening, not projecting, not performing. Just present. Worn close.
Cultural impact
The Only One found its place through the violet-coffee pairing. The combination is distinctive enough that wearers remember it. The moderate sillage suits it, intimate rather than announced. Emilia Clarke fronted the campaign, anchoring the fragrance in a particular kind of modern, composed femininity. The violet and coffee pairing gives it a signature that stands apart from other scents in its category, while the restrained projection keeps it personal rather than commanding attention.
