The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Dolce Rosa Excelsa arrived in early 2016 as the third chapter in Dolce&Gabbana's Dolce collection, following the 2014 original and 2015's Dolce Floral Drops. The name suggests an elevated floral vision, and that ambition runs through the composition: two roses meet two white florals in a heart that shimmers rather than swoons. White amaryllis anchors the collection's signature, lending its powdery, slightly green-edged bloom to the overall structure. Kate King continues as face, connecting this scent to the visual language of Sicilian womanhood Dolce&Gabbana has championed since the original Dolce. The interplay between the dual rose heart and the cooling white florals creates something that feels both opulent and restrained, a contradiction the brand has always handled with confidence.
Two roses make an unusual pairing here. African Dog rose, used for the first time ever in a Dolce&Gabbana fragrance, brings a wild, fruity edge that distinguishes it from cultivated varieties. Paired with Turkish rose absolute, it creates a heart that's simultaneously exotic and translucent. Water lily adds the aquatic counterpoint, cool where the rose could turn heavy, keeping the entire composition in a register that's modern rather than romantic. Cashmeran, the synthetic cashmere wood note, does the work of warmth without the weight of real sandalwood.
The evolution
The opening arrives bright and tropical. Papaya flower and neroli create a juicy citrus-green burst, distinctly modern, slightly synthetic, unmistakably Dolce. Within minutes, the white florals take over. Water lily's cool aquatic quality tempers the amaryllis, and the dual rose heart emerges, shimmering rather than heavy, almost translucent. The transition from top to heart happens quickly, the tropical brightness yielding almost before you notice. By mid-drydown, cashmeran and musk create that soft skin-close effect the brand does so well. Sandalwood lingers quietly beneath, adding just enough woody warmth to keep it from disappearing. The entire arc settles into something powdery and intimate that stays close, a whisper, not a statement.
Cultural impact
Dolce Rosa Excelsa expanded the Dolce collection's reach, introducing a new dimension to the house's floral portfolio. Its use of African Dog rose marked a first for the brand, signaling willingness to experiment with unconventional ingredients within their signature style. The fragrance brought something fresh to the Dolce lineup while maintaining the feminine elegance that defines the collection. The combination of aquatic lily with the rose heart created a different kind of floral statement, one that felt contemporary without abandoning the romanticism the house is known for.
