The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Cool Water Exotic Summer arrived in 2016 as part of Davidoff's annual limited-edition summer line, a tradition that began with Cool Water Coral Reef in 2014. The house drew on its Swiss heritage of water-inspired freshness, translating the sparkle of a sun-lit lagoon into a perfume. By pairing a juicy Mandarin Orange with aromatic Sage and Basil, Davidoff grounded the oceanic theme in something more terrestrial and Mediterranean. The addition of Juniper added a cool, almost conifer-like edge, reinforcing the sense of water-adjacent vegetation. The result was a summer fragrance that felt rooted in herbs rather than just marine accords.
Davidoff chose the opening notes of Sage, Mandarin Orange, Basil, and Juniper as a deliberate counterpoint to the expected marine theme of the Cool Water line. The herbs bring a Mediterranean quality to the fragrance, evoking the landscapes where summer heat meets cool coastal breezes. Mint in the heart functions as a bridge between the fresh opening and the warm base, its mentholated coolness keeping the composition lively in high temperatures. Sandalwood at the base grounds the fragrance, providing the longevity and depth that light summer scents often lack.
The evolution
The fragrance moves through three distinct phases that mirror the arc of a warm afternoon. In the opening, Mandarin Orange hits first, bright and citrusy, almost immediately joined by Sage and Basil, which tog ether create a green, herbivorous freshness that feels hand-picked rather than synthetic. Juniper lingers at the edges, contributing a subtle pine note that grounds the citrus. Within minutes, Mint arrives in the heart, taking center stage with its clean, cold sensation. It does not amplify the sweetness of the opening; instead, it straightens the trajectory, steering the fragrance toward clarity and crispness. As the drydown sets in, Sandalwood introduces itself slowly, its creamy, slightly sweet woodiness warming the cool mint and transforming the character from bracing to comfortable. The Sandalwood lingers for hours, creating a close sillage that feels effortless rather than heavy.
Cultural impact
Since its 2016 release, Exotic Summer has become a favorite among collectors seeking Davidoff’s seasonal twists on the iconic Cool Water DNA. The limited‑edition bottle, adorned with palm‑tree accents, sparked buzz on social platforms, positioning the scent as a go‑to summer staple for those who appreciate accessible luxury with a fresh, aquatic twist.
