The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
XOXO arrived in 2022 from Damask Haus, an indie house where Bri Beyer works as the nose behind the fragrance. The name carries affection in shorthand. The composition carries it in a different language entirely. There's nothing syrupy about this scent. The cardamom and bamboo opening reads almost mineral, the kind of cool shimmer you might associate with cut stems or polished stone. Bright, clean, surprising. The spice isn't loud but it's present, a quiet percussion under all that clarity. You could mistake it for a cologne-style fragrance before the warmer notes start pulling at your attention. There's a structure here that takes its time. Instead of rushing toward sweetness, the composition holds its distance and lets each layer settle into place.
What gives XOXO its particular character is the way caramel and vanilla are treated at the base. They're present, but never allowed to dominate. Sandalwood and cedar filter that sweetness, sanding down any rough edges, while a green, aromatic heart of lavender, coriander, and heather keeps the whole thing honest. The lavender brings a soft herbal coolness. Coriander adds a citrusy bite that's almost peppery. Heather comes through faintly floral, a little wild, a little windswept. The sweetness stays real throughout the wear but it never gets sticky or cloying. Nothing about XOXO overwhelms.
The evolution
Cardamom and bamboo lead the way in XOXO, opening with a cool, almost translucent quality. The spice carries a quiet snap, that warm-tingly side of cardamom without the sweetness. Bamboo adds a green, watery facet that feels clean and slightly mineral, the kind of note that makes you think of something freshly cut. As the composition develops, lavender and heather come forward, softening the initial chill with herbal aromatics. Lavender stays bright and slightly medicinal here, while heather contributes a dry, almost hay-like sweetness that adds texture without weight. Coriander works through the middle phase too, lending a subtle citrusy brightness that lifts the whole arrangement. Toward the later stages the woods take over. Sandalwood provides a creamy, rounded foundation, the kind of warmth that feels soft against the skin.
Cultural impact
XOXO makes a strong case for what an indie fragrance can offer when the notes are chosen with care and the construction stays disciplined. The cardamom and bamboo opening gives it a distinct personality right away, the kind of first impression that catches attention without resorting to loud projection. As the composition unfolds, the transition from that cool, mineral-feeling top into the warmer heart and base shows a level of restraint that's worth noting. Lavender and heather keep the middle stage grounded, while sandalwood and vanilla in the drydown offer comfort that doesn't tip into excess.
