The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Cher's Decades Collection arrived in 2022 with four fragrances, each tied to a defining era of the singer's legendary style. 80's Couture captures the decade that made glamour a contact sport, excess, boldness, and unapologetic shine. The perfumers at DSM-Firmenich built this one around bright citrus and white florals, a combination that mirrors the era's relationship with glamour: no wallflowers, no quiet exits.
The note structure is interesting because it balances retro with modern restraint. Mandarin and pomelo open bright and effervescent, a citrus style that feels unmistakably 80s in its optimism. Gardenia and honeysuckle bring the heart, lush, tropical, a little decadent. The cashmere wood and tonka bean base keeps everything warm and close, preventing the florals from flying too far into the avant-garde. It's sweet, it's lactonic, and it commits to that character without hedging. That kind of conviction is harder to find than it sounds.
The evolution
The opening is immediate, mandarin and grapefruit arrive sparkling, bright, with a juiciness that cuts. Five to ten minutes in, the florals begin to unfold. Gardenia is the dominant voice here, sweet and slightly heady, while honeysuckle threads underneath with its honeyed warmth. The citrus doesn't disappear so much as soften, becoming a background brightness rather than the lead. The heart lasts a good two hours, full and floral. Then the drydown arrives, cashmere wood and tonka bean working together, creamy and intimate, sweet without being sugary. By hour five or six, it's skin-close and warm, the kind of presence you catch when leaning in rather than across the room. Lasts through an evening without reapplication.
Cultural impact
Part of Cher's Decades Collection, 80's Couture captures a decade known for bold choices and maximalist glamour. The 80s shaped luxury fashion and pop culture, and this fragrance wears that spirit without irony. It speaks to anyone drawn to sweet, bold, white floral compositions that commit fully to their character.
