The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Heather D'Angelo designed Immortelle 43 | 17 after visiting the Dalmatian coast, where immortelle thrives against salt winds and rocky soil. Rather than replicating a laboratory extraction of the flower, she sought to translate the spirit of that resilient bloom into a wearable form. Working with Carta, she built a fragrance around immortelle's natural character, pairing it with ambergris to capture a coastal quality, and with honey and caramel to soften the plant's inherent bitterness. Orange peel and orris root were chosen to add brightness and complexity without overwhelming the core note.
The pairing of immortelle with ambergris was deliberate. D'Angelo wanted the fragrance to evoke sea air meeting wild herbs, the salty-animalic quality of ambergris functioning as a bridge between the immortelle and its coastal origins. Honey and caramel do not sweeten the scent into submission; they amplify warmth. Orris root grounds the composition with its powdery, slightly woody presence, ensuring that immortelle's tenacity has a graceful endpoint. Spicy notes and orange peel complete the arc, providing contrast that keeps the blend from becoming monolithic.
The evolution
The fragrance begins the moment it touches skin, immortelle already prominent alongside orange peel's citrus snap. Within the first thirty minutes, honey and caramel emerge, their sweetness tempering the herbal intensity of the bloom. Ambergris adds its characteristic warmth, while spicy notes flicker beneath the surface. As hours pass, the gourmand elements recede gradually, leaving orris root and immortelle as the final lingering impression, their powdery-herbaceous alliance persisting well beyond the four-hour mark.
