    Heather D'Angelo

Heather D'Angelo grew up in Brooklyn, where the rhythm of the city met the quiet of nearby parks. After a stint as an intern at Mongabay, she earned a degree in ecology and spent several years cataloguing plant communities in the Pacific Northwest. The fieldwork sparked a fascination with how scent marks a landscape, and she began experimenting with natural extracts in her kitchen. In 2011 she launched Carta Fragrances, a line built on sustainably harvested ingredients and transparent sourcing. Around the same time she co‑founded the indie pop group Au Revoir Simone, a venture that taught her how to blend narratives with melody. Heather now teaches introductory and advanced virtual perfumery classes, guiding students through pure naturals before adding calibrated aromachemicals. Her work has earned features in Vogue and niche‑press interviews, positioning her as one of the few ecologically trained noses shaping contemporary fragrance.

    How Heather composes

Heather’s technique blends scientific rigor with artistic intuition. In the lab she measures extracts with analytical balances, records volatility curves, and cross‑checks batch consistency. At the same time she listens to the scent’s emotional tone, adjusting accords by hand rather than relying on pre‑made accords. Her preferred ingredients include sustainably harvested oakmoss, wild heather, and cold‑pressed citrus peels, complemented by a select range of transparent aromachemicals such as iso e super and hedione when the formula calls for lift. She favors linear structures that evolve slowly on the skin, allowing the wearer to discover subtle shifts over hours.

    Philosophy

    What drives Heather

Heather views scent as a direct line from soil to skin. She believes a fragrance should honor the plant’s original chemistry and the people who tend it. Each Carta composition starts with a field‑sourced raw material, documented with GPS coordinates and harvest date. She then balances that anchor with a handful of supporting notes, letting the natural heart speak without heavy synthetics. Sustainability drives every decision; she refuses ingredients that require destructive farming or opaque supply chains. By teaching both natural‑only and aromachemical‑enhanced classes, she encourages the next generation to respect the environment while exploring the full palette of modern perfumery.
