The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
212 VIP Black Smiley is the 2022 limited-edition chapter in Carolina Herrera's 212 VIP line. The original 212 VIP played clean and confident, and Black Smiley builds on that legacy while exploring new territory. Carlos Benaïm and Juliette Karagueuzoglou constructed a fragrance that doesn't behave the way you might expect. The name says it all: the smiley emoji has been a signature throughout the VIP line, but Black adds an edge the others only hint at. It's a darker take on the familiar motif, something that works the room without announcing itself. The polished presentation hides a more complex character underneath, one that rewards attention.
What makes this composition work is the sesame absolute. It sits in the heart alongside Provençal lavender and Madagascan pepper, adding a nutty, slightly bitter dimension that brings an unexpected depth to the blend. The sesame bridges the gap between aromatic freshness and skin-warm comfort, creating a connection that feels intentional rather than accidental. The blood orange in the top gives the ginger something to bounce off, establishing a citrus-spice opening that feels energetic without being aggressive.
The evolution
Blood orange arrives first, bright, tart, immediate. The citrus cuts through with a clarity that feels clean without being sterile. Ginger follows within minutes, adding a clean heat that keeps the citrus from feeling like a cleaning product. The transition to heart happens as the sesame begins to assert itself alongside the pepper and lavender, pushing the citrus into the background in a gradual shift that feels organic rather than sudden. Lavender emerges more slowly, adding an aromatic softness that balances the spice and nuttiness with a floral quality that keeps the heart from becoming too heavy. By the time the vanilla and caramelized almond have taken over, they're not alone; the skin accord keeps them grounded, making the drydown feel intimate rather than sweet.
Cultural impact
The sesame and skin accord put Black Smiley in a category that stands apart from typical masculine fragrances. It's not built around the expected masculine tropes or the safe aquatic notes that have dominated for decades. Instead, it leans into warmth and intimacy, creating a scent that feels personal rather than performative. The sesame note especially gives it a distinctive character that invites conversation, something you notice and something that stays with you long after the first spray. It's the kind of fragrance that works best when worn with confidence, the kind that makes people lean in rather than step back.
