The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name says everything and nothing. Sandstorm, a force of nature, violent, transient, impossible to pin down. Yet Aliénor Massenet approached this brief with restraint rather than chaos. The 2022 release doesn't try to capture a storm's destruction. It captures what comes after, the settled air, the warmth trapped in stillness, the mineral quiet of a landscape that's been through something. The composition finds tension in contrast: aromatic herbs meet amber warmth, violet leaf meets dry incense, cashmeran meets black pepper. The name is a provocation. The scent is an answer.
The composition features lavender and geranium, two herbs that usually play supporting roles. Lavender gives the opening its cool, almost medicinal clarity. Geranium adds a crispness that borders on green, a slight metallic edge that keeps the top notes from feeling soft too early. Between them, black pepper and nutmeg introduce warmth that builds gradually rather than announcing itself. The real secret is cashmeran, a note that mimics the softness of cashmere.
The evolution
The opening hits quick: citrus brightness, then black pepper's sharp crack. Lavender follows within seconds, cooling everything down. Violet leaf adds a fleeting green note, gone before you can pin it down. By the end of the first hour, the geranium and nutmeg have taken over, turning the composition warmer and slightly spicier. The second hour is where Sandstorm makes its case: cashmeran emerges, wrapping the herbs in something soft and close. The drydown stretches longest, three to four hours of amber, tonka bean, and frankincense sitting quietly on the skin. Not projecting. Not announcing. Just there, warm and powdery and faintly smoky, until it fades into skin scent and memory.
Cultural impact
Sandstorm occupies an interesting space: aromatic and spicy without being aggressive, warm and powdery without being sweet. It's the kind of fragrance that rewards attention, not immediately striking, but quietly composed. The blend of lavender, geranium, and frankincense creates something that feels considered rather than obvious. There's a mineral quality underlying the herbs that gives the scent unexpected depth, making it linger in memory long after the initial spray. The overall effect is one of quiet confidence, a fragrance that speaks softly but leaves a lasting impression.
