The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Extravagant arrived in 2022 as a rose-oud composition from Benigna Parfums, a house that treats fragrance as a vehicle for personal magnitude and shared triumph. Pascal Gaurin composed it, working with a palette heavy enough to demand attention. The Turkish rose and oud sit at the center, neither softened nor sanded down for easy wear. There's a richness here that reads less like decoration and more like a deliberate gesture, something closer to theater than polite accessory. The composition doesn't hide behind minimalism or restraint. It wants to fill a room, to hold the air around the wearer with the kind of presence that turns heads without shouting. Each note arrives with weight and intention, building toward a scent that feels curated rather than accidental.
What separates this from the crowded rose-oud landscape is the green, almost bitter hit of blackcurrant bud absolute at the top. That ingredient carries a sharp, slightly animal edge that most fragrances avoid, and here it gives the Turkish rose something to push against instead of a soft landing. The friction at the opening is intentional, a meeting of green sharpness and jammy floral density that creates immediate tension. Healingwood® sits in the base alongside cypriol and frankincense, contributing a clean woodiness that reads closer to incense smoke than conventional wood.
The evolution
The opening is the loudest moment in Extravagant. Blackcurrant bud pushes forward first, green and slightly animal, and the Turkish rose arrives almost simultaneously, jammy and dense rather than powdery. There's no slow ramp or cautious build. Geranium and jasmine sambac take over quickly, spicing the rose with a clove-tinged warmth and adding a creamy sweetness that softens the opening without dulling its edges. The heart holds with presence and weight, neither shrinking nor apologizing for itself. The geranium cuts through the floral density with a peppery snap, while the jasmine adds body and roundness, wrapping around the rose like smoke around a flame. As the hours pass, the base descends gradually. Cypriol brings an earthy, pencil-shaving dryness that grounds the composition. Frankincense adds a cool, incense note that opens space above the heavier materials.
Cultural impact
Extravagant occupies a specific corner of the rose-oud conversation, one where fruit-forward openings meet deep resinous bases in compositions that refuse subtlety. It carries forward a heritage of oud-driven work while leaning into bolder, more immediate fruit accents, a direction that has gained traction across newer niche releases. The fragrance reads as a statement piece, the kind of scent chosen by wearers who want presence rather than whisper. Its blend of Turkish rose with blackcurrant bud and a smoky base of oud, frankincense, and cypriol positions it among the more assertive compositions in its category.
