The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
détermination is ba[dr]'s attempt to bottle a state of mind. The brand launched in 2024 with four fragrances named after virtues, altruisme, détermination, résistance, bravoure, each one an abstract concept the wearer is invited to inhabit rather than simply smell. The name here is the brief. Determination doesn't meander. It arrives. The perfumer, undisclosed, as with all ba[dr]'s debut work, built this around a citrus clarity that doesn't soften as it settles, a cedar structure that gives the warmth that follows something to hold onto.
The pyramid is unusually linear. Most fragrances bury their heart notes beneath performance-focused bases. détermination lets cedar, jasmine, and neroli occupy the middle third with full presence. That's unusual. What emerges is a scent that doesn't just announce itself and retreat, the citrus isn't gone by the time oud arrives, it's still there, refracted through florals and wood. The composition earns its name through architecture rather than intensity.
The evolution
The opening hits fast. Bright citrus, bergamot and orange arriving almost simultaneously, no ceremony, no buildup. Give it five minutes and cedar moves in, woody and direct. Jasmine follows with a softness that might surprise anyone expecting the scent to stay sharp. Neroli adds a clean, slightly bitter floral note that keeps the heart from becoming too sweet. By the time oud and patchouli arrive, the jasmine has opened into something luminous. The drydown is warm without heaviness. Vanilla wraps around the oud, but the patchouli keeps it grounded. What lingers is skin-close and present, a warmth that reminds you determination never really leaves.
Cultural impact
détermination sits within a small group of concept-driven independent fragrances that have emerged in recent years, alongside releases from houses like Goldfield & Banks Australia and bdk Parfums. The fragrance doesn't lean on perfumer mythology or heritage marketing, its appeal rests on how the composition itself communicates its concept. Wearers gravitate toward fragrances that function as sensory arguments, not just pleasant background noise.
