The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Exponential Vanilla launched in 2024, with Ghriss Mohamed credited as its perfumer. Its composition moves away from a simple dessert profile and toward a warm, layered sweetness. Vanilla, cacao, coffee, tonka bean, Turkish rose, Thailand oud, sugar cane, bourbon vanilla, cane sugar, and cocoa build a fragrance designed to feel rich, rounded, and dark around the edges. Vanilla supplies a creamy base, while cacao and coffee add depth, roast, and a faint smoky bitterness. Tonka bean and Thailand oud contribute resinous and woody structure, and Turkish rose brings a soft floral lift. Together, the notes create a dense, rounded sweet effect with enough coffee, wood, and smoke to keep it from reading as straightforward vanilla.
What makes the composition distinctive is the friction between several kinds of sweetness. Bourbon vanilla and cane sugar bring a creamy, edible warmth. Cacao and coffee add depth, roast, and a faint smoky bitterness, tempering the sugar without dulling its rich character. Turkish rose introduces floral lift, lending a soft red and rose-like contrast to the darker gourmand notes. Meanwhile, tonka bean and Thailand oud give the blend resinous structure and a woody base that makes the sweetness feel more grounded.
The evolution
At first, the fragrance reads bright and plush, with vanilla, sugar cane, and cacao creating a sweet entry point. Coffee quickly adds a roasted, gently smoky edge, while Turkish rose brings a soft floral contrast that keeps the sweetness from becoming flat. The opening is creamy and inviting, but the darker notes soon become more apparent, giving the composition a richer and more complex character. As the scent settles, tonka bean and Thailand oud make it darker and more resinous, giving the creamy vanilla a woody backbone. Cacao and coffee deepen the middle, while rose softens the sharper roasted and resinous facets. The drydown remains rich rather than disappearing, with cacao, coffee, rose, tonka bean, oud, and vanilla continuing to linger in a balanced sweet, smoky, floral, and woody blend.
Cultural impact
Exponential Vanilla pushes vanilla toward a darker, coffee-and-oud territory. Its profile is built around a composed kind of sweetness, with creamy bourbon vanilla and cane sugar set against roasted cacao, coffee, resinous tonka bean, and woody Thailand oud. Turkish rose adds a contrasting floral layer, keeping the composition from settling into a uniformly sweet dessert profile. The result feels textured and layered: vanilla remains central, but coffee brings depth, cocoa adds a faint bitter edge, rose introduces softness, and oud lends structure.
