The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Atkinsons launched the English Garden collection in 2014, and Gentle Camelia was designed as its most feminine expression. The brief was simple: translate the English countryside into something wearable. The camellia was the centerpiece. The collection arrived in round transparent flacons decorated with ribbons and botanical prints, referencing the ingredients inside: peony, peach, camellia, and lemon. Each bottle contains 100ml of Eau de Parfum. The scent opens with bright, tangy fruit notes that immediately evoke a sun-dappled garden path, where the air carries the clean, green sweetness of fresh blooms. As the top notes settle, the camellia emerges at the heart, bringing a delicate, floral presence that feels both natural and refined.
The camellia's waxy, powdery character, almost lipstick-adjacent in its drydown, is what makes Gentle Camelia distinctive rather than interchangeable. Lotus and violet leaves add an aquatic, green undertone that prevents the florals from reading sweet. Blackcurrant and watermelon in the top provide a cooling effect that lifts the composition into something fresh rather than heavy. The result is a fragrance that smells like a garden after rain, translated through Atkinsons' unmistakable restraint.
The evolution
The opening features blackcurrant and bergamot arriving together, with watermelon providing a cool, almost misty counterpoint. There is a dewy quality to the first moments, the kind of freshness that suggests moisture still clinging to petals. The camellia arrives as the top notes begin to shift, bringing a powdery, slightly waxy presence that defines the heart of the composition. Lotus and violet leaves add an aquatic undertone that keeps everything green and alive rather than sweet. The composition settles into a soft, powdery drydown, heliotrope and musk with woody notes that keep it intimate. The fragrance maintains its character throughout wear, gradually becoming softer and more skin-close as time passes.
Cultural impact
Gentle Camelia sits comfortably in the tradition of refined English florals, understated, well-mannered, and quietly confident. The camellia's powdery character gives it a distinctive quality that rewards attention, setting it apart from more conventional floral compositions. Its restraint makes it particularly suited to those who appreciate subtlety over ostentation in their fragrance choices.
