The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Atelier Rebul's Parfum Artisanal Elixir 2 arrived as a distinctive entry in the house's extraits line, an extrait that takes the sweet path through plum and vanilla rather than the fresh one its predecessor charts. The collection leans on high-quality ingredients and a maturation process designed to coax depth from each formula. The perfumer behind Elixir 2 is not named in public records, though the brand's previous Parfum Artisanal release, the sibling fragrance known as Élixir 1, carries the signature of Alberto Morillas, one of the most prolific noses of the last three decades.
What makes Elixir 2 interesting is the unusual placement of plum and musk in the opening rather than the base. The labdanum in the heart does the heavy structural lifting, adding a resinous grain that keeps the sweetness from tipping into confection. There's an inversion happening here, a deliberate swap of the usual hierarchy, and it changes how the fragrance communicates. Plum, typically a supporting player in compositions of this family, takes its turn at center stage, while musk, often reserved for the drydown, opens the door.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are the most openly sweet: plum with a powdery edge, cushioned by musk in a way that feels like fabric rather than skin. Around the 30-minute mark, the labdanum starts pulling the composition inward, adding a resinous warmth that slowly replaces the fruit. By hour two, the white woods and labdanum hold the middle ground while vanilla begins its ascent from the base. The drydown, arriving somewhere around hour four and lingering beyond, settles into a close vanilla-amber-musk blend. It reads almost gourmand at first glance, but the labdanum and woods keep it grounded, more like warm resin than cake. The transition from opening to drydown is where Elixir 2 reveals its construction. The plum doesn't vanish so much as it retreats, sinking beneath the labdanum and resurfacing in occasional flickers, like a memory rather than a presence.
Cultural impact
Elixir 2 sits at the warmer end of the Parfum Artisanal collection, classified as Oriental Woody and offering a profile built around plum, vanilla, labdanum, and musk. Community wear data shows the fragrance sees heaviest use in fall and winter, with autumn pulling the highest numbers, followed by winter, spring, and summer trailing behind. This seasonal pattern aligns with its composition, a warm, resinous, and sweet-leaning profile that suits cooler weather when heavier, more enveloping scents tend to resonate.
