The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2011, Atelier Cologne tasked perfumer Jérôme Epinette with a question: what happens when you build a cologne around something other than citrus? Oolang Infini was the answer. The name itself is a statement, oolong, the partially oxidized tea that sits between green and black, infinite in its complexity. Epinette chose it as the fragrance's gravitational center, letting the tea lead rather than support. Bergamot and neroli provide the initial brightness, jasmine and blond leather the unexpected warmth, and tobacco flower the grounding finish. The result is a cologne that earns its 'absolue' designation, lasting where traditional colognes fade, without losing the spirit of clarity that defines the house.
The note structure is what makes Oolang Infini work. Oolong tea sits at an unusual intersection, more complex than green tea, warmer than black tea, with a slightly smoky, floral quality that gives it dimension. In perfumery, it's typically a supporting player. Here, it's the protagonist. The addition of blond leather is the bolder move, leather is rare in citrus-forward compositions, and the 'blond' qualifier matters. This isn't heavy saddle leather. It's suede, warmed by the tea and jasmine around it. The tobacco flower in the base adds a gentle sweetness that rounds everything without becoming heavy. Together, the pyramid reads as coherent: tea as concept, leather as character, tobacco as memory.
The evolution
The opening is immediate, bergamot and neroli create a bright, almost sparkling impression. The citrus reads European, clean, intentional. Freesia adds a whisper of softness that keeps it from being sharp. Around the 30-minute mark, the handoff begins. The citrus recedes and the oolong steps forward, a warm, slightly smoky tea note that feels richer than expected. This is when the leather arrives. Not heavy, not animalic, the blond leather reads as suede, soft and warm against the tea. Jasmine threads through, adding a floral roundness that prevents the composition from going too dry. By the second hour, the base takes over. Tobacco flower and guaiac wood create a woody warmth that stays close to the skin. The projection is moderate, this is a fragrance that announces itself to no one but remains present for those nearby. Four to six hours on skin, closer to eight on fabric. The drydown is subtle: a clean, warm skin note that lingers into the evening.
Cultural impact
Oolang Infini occupies a specific niche in the citrus fragrance world, for wearers who want the clarity of a cologne but demand more than fleeting freshness. The tea note differentiates it from conventional citrus colognes, while the leather and tobacco add the kind of complexity that rewards attention. Community reception is divided in productive ways: those who want projection find the moderate sillage frustrating; those who want refinement find it ideal. The fragrance performs best in cooler weather, spring mornings, autumn afternoons, when its warmth complements rather than overwhelms. For professional settings, the 4-6 hour longevity and restrained projection make it a natural choice.
