The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Conceived in 2014, Lizar Oud emerged from Asalat Al Oud's mission to showcase agarwood in its most unfiltered form. The house, founded in Saudi Arabia in 2010, had spent years refining its approach to pure oud and wanted a fragrance that demonstrated what the material could do without compromise. The concept was straightforward: take raw agarwood and build around it in ways that amplified rather than softened its power. Black leather was chosen for its texture and its capacity to intensify the smoky, almost aggressive side of oud. Jasmine was added to provide contrast, a quiet floral note that could thread through the leather without competing with it. The result was a fragrance built for presence, one that lets the resinous heart of oud lead from start to finish.
Cardamom is an unusual top note for an oud-focused fragrance. It is more commonly found in Oriental and spicy compositions, but it serves a specific purpose here: it provides an aromatic clarity that cuts through the heaviness before the leather and jasmine arrive. The choice reflects an understanding that oud benefits from a clean entry point rather than an immediate dive into resinous depth. Jasmine was selected to pair with black leather specifically because the contrast between a delicate floral and a coarse material creates an interesting tension. The leather keeps the jasmine grounded while the jasmine keeps the leather from becoming purely industrial.
The evolution
The evolution of Lizar Oud begins with cardamom, which provides a sharp, aromatic opening that feels like an announcement. The spice is clean and purposeful, opening the composition with clarity rather than sweetness. As the top note recedes, black leather takes center stage and the jasmine begins to unfold quietly alongside it. The two materials create a heart that is textured and warm, with the floral element keeping the leather from feeling purely austere. Amber enters the transition, adding a honeyed warmth that smooths the movement toward the base. The drydown is where oud claims its territory. Patchouli provides an earthy undertone, woody notes add structure, and the agarwood itself delivers a smoky, resinous foundation that persists for hours. The entire arc is deliberate, each phase building on the last to create a fragrance that is cohesive from first spray to final fade.
Cultural impact
Lizar Oud quickly became a reference point for collectors seeking a bold leather‑oud hybrid. Its unapologetic blend has been praised in regional forums for balancing raw oud power with a refined floral‑leather twist, positioning it as a go‑to for evenings and special occasions where a statement scent is desired.
