The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Released in 2022, Spicy Oud joined Arlyn's expanding catalogue of vegan compositions with a clear mandate: bring the depth of a traditional oud fragrance to a formula rooted in plant-based and synthetic ingredients. The house works across familiar scent archetypes, and this one leans into spicy-woody territory, reaching for castoreum and agarwood at the top, cypress and juniper at the heart, angelica and ginger underneath. Castoreum, traditionally an animal-derived material, is here rendered through synthetic alternatives, a structure that allows the composition to deliver oud's signature darkness without compromising the vegan formulation. The result reads assertive from the first spray, built around contrast between raw animalic warmth and clean herbal wood.
Spicy Oud chooses its own path through oud territory. The castoreum does the sweet-adjacent work, reading warm and almost edible, a leathery richness that recalls well-worn hide. The cypress-juniper pairing keeps the heart from collapsing into sweetness, adding a resinous green edge that makes the whole composition feel outdoors, like pine bark underfoot in cool air. The juniper specifically brings a slightly bitter, aromatic snap that prevents the cypress from reading too clean, giving the heart a textured, almost rustic quality.
The evolution
The opening belongs to castoreum and agarwood, and they're immediate. Animalic, nearly aggressive, like warm leather pressed against skin. Not polite. Not trying to be. The oud thickens quickly, coating everything in a dark resinous density that fills the air around the wearer. The castoreum gives the opening a deeply musky undertone, something that suggests skin and fur and heat, while the agarwood lays down its almost medicinal smokiness on top. Then cypress and juniper push through, and the composition does something unexpected: it goes green. Fresh, almost cologne-like in its brightness, but wrapped in that lingering oud haze. The green phase holds for a substantial stretch of the wear, the juniper adding a slightly gin-like aromatic snap to the cypress's more piney character.
Cultural impact
Spicy Oud arrives as a vegan composition that tackles one of perfumery's most storied material categories, oud. It appeals to someone who wants oud's characteristic depth without certain dominant conventions in the broader category. The fragrance has been compared to Tom Ford's Oud Wood by some wearers, positioning it within a recognizable lineage of woody oud compositions while maintaining a distinct character through its assertive castoreum opening and pronounced ginger presence.
