Why it exists.
The beginning
Cécile Zarokian created Oud Ulya for Amouage's The Attars collection, released in 2021. The composition was designed to embody raw oud in its most uncompromising form, uncut, unpolished, and unapologetic about what it is. The Attars collection is Amouage's most concentrated line, bottled at 100% oil, and Oud Ulya is one of its most austere entries. Zarokian didn't soften the oud here. She let it breathe, then gave it fire to breathe back. The fragrance opens with a dark, resinous depth that feels almost physical, the oud asserting itself without apology. There is a warmth that builds as it settles, creating an almost meditative quality that invites discovery.
Three notes: Assam oud, vanilla, birch tar, and the restraint is the point. Most oud fragrances layer on florals and spices to make the material more approachable. Oud Ulya does the opposite: it lets the raw animality of Assam oud lead, then amplifies the smoke with birch tar until the effect becomes something almost tactile. The vanilla doesn't sweeten so much as warm, it moves the composition from aggressive to enveloping. At its concentration, this is perfume as a slow burn.
The evolution
The opening announces itself immediately, Assam oud's dark resin, then birch tar's smoke cuts through like a struck match. No preamble. The animalic quality is front and center, and it is intentionally rough-edged. This is not a polished entrance. After the first hour, the vanilla begins to surface, not sugary, but warm, almost resinous itself, threading through the smoke and softening what came before. The composition shifts from confrontational to something more meditative. By the third hour, the birch tar settles into the background as a leathery warmth, with the oud and vanilla holding the composition together. The drydown is the payoff: hours later, there is a trace on the skin, smoky, sweet, and animalic, like fabric that remembers wearing it. On fabric, it can linger until the next day.
