The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Oud Rising arrived in 2023, and the name says everything. This is oud as the main event, not a whispered base note or a marketing claim on the bottle, but the actual substance of the composition. Perfumer Imran Fazlani built it around that single premise: what happens when you let agarwood lead instead of support? The answer is a fragrance that opens with conviction and earns its way into the drydown rather than arriving there by default.
The choice to open with orange blossom alongside the oud is the decision that makes this work. Without it, the composition risks becoming a single-note oud, impressive in quality, limited in range. The blossom doesn't soften the oud so much as it contextualizes it. It gives the smoke somewhere to travel toward. Brazilian rosewood and cardamom in the heart keep the warmth grounded while the florals continue their conversation with the wood, and by the time vetiver and tonka bean arrive, the fragrance has a narrative arc rather than just a trajectory.
The evolution
The opening salvo is all cypress and oud, resinous, slightly green, with the orange blossom cutting through like a flash of light. It lasts longer than most openings, sitting in that sharp phase for thirty to forty-five minutes before the amber and rosewood arrive to broaden the palette. Cardamom adds a warmth that feels almost edible without becoming sweet. The drydown is where the magic settles: musk and tonka bean create a skin-close warmth that stays present for hours without announcing itself. Vetiver grounds everything, preventing the base from floating into abstraction. On fabric, it lingers overnight, on skin, expect the full arc through an evening.
Cultural impact
Oud Rising exists in a crowded space. The fragrance presents itself with clarity, offering the richness of oud without overwhelming the wearer. Its approach is measured where others might be bold, creating an experience that invites rather than demands attention. The composition speaks to those who appreciate the depth of oud but prefer something that adapts to their presence rather than announcing it from across the room.
