The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sands Of Time arrived in 2023, a release that placed Adscenture firmly in the resin-forward corner of contemporary fragrance. The brand handed the build to perfumer Quintessence, and the resulting composition stays committed to a narrow palette. Frankincense opens at the top, labdanum and patchouli anchor the middle, and amber, musk, and tonka settle everything below. No bright citrus cuts through, no aromatic herbs pull attention elsewhere. Just resin, earth, and the slow slide into sweetness. The structure asks for patience, trading the immediate gratification of opening fireworks for something that deepens as it dries. Each note appears to know exactly where it belongs in the hierarchy, and none of them jostle for attention above their station.
Frankincense carries the opening alone, a focused statement that sounds simple until you register everything it omits. There is no sharp camphor bite, no green pepper lift, no lemony edge to brighten the resin. What arrives instead is cool and almost chalky, hovering above the heavier materials below like smoke that has not yet decided where to fall. The restraint becomes its own kind of presence, a refusal to perform that paradoxically draws you closer. Then labdanum steps in to bridge the incense with something darker and sweeter.
The evolution
On skin, frankincense opens like cold stone in a quiet room. There is a mineral edge to it, almost architectural, a sense of structure and stillness that defines the early minutes of wear. The resin reads clean and deliberate, stripped of anything decorative, holding its shape while the other notes gather underneath. Then labdanum arrives, and the temperature shifts. The dry stone smell softens into something sweeter, faintly leathery, as patchouli swells beneath it like groundwater rising. You stop noticing individual notes and start feeling weight, a gravitational pull toward the warmer base materials. By the second or third hour, the composition has compacted into something that smells less like incense and more like warm skin after a long day, an intimacy that feels earned rather than given.
Cultural impact
Sands Of Time operates in a register where restraint carries more weight than volume. The composition trusts the wearer to wait through the cooler opening for the warmer materials to arrive, and that patience becomes part of the fragrance's appeal. For someone drawn to frankincense treated with deliberation rather than force, it offers a quieter entry point than compositions that pile on intensity from the first spray. The labdanum arrives on its own schedule, the patchouli settles without rushing, and the drydown reveals itself gradually rather than announcing itself upfront.
