The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Oud Caravan series emerged from Dominique Dubrana's ongoing dialogue with agarwood, a material he considers among the most challenging and rewarding in natural perfumery. Oud Caravan No. 3 draws specifically on aged wild Bengali oud, a variety known for its deep animalic complexity and balsamic undertones. The oud itself is dense and resinous, with a richness that takes time to fully appreciate. On the skin, it reveals layers gradually, the animalic facets weaving through the balsamic base like a conversation that deepens as it continues. Sweet dates appear in the composition, their presence adding a dimension of softness that complements rather than overwhelms the oud's natural intensity.
What makes this composition unusual is the restraint within the complexity. The animalic notes are present but controlled, woven into a structure that allows them to speak rather than shout. Here, the barnyard depth that characterizes authentic oud has been integrated thoughtfully, its rawness balanced by the sweet fruit notes that accompany it. The dates add a syrupy sweetness that acts as a counterweight, softening the edges without flattening the overall character. It's oud that breathes. The overall effect is one of measured intensity rather than overwhelming projection.
The evolution
It arrives with authority. The opening is all aged oud, deep and resinous, with animalic complexity that speaks to its wild origins. This is the dense, concentrated character of genuine agarwood, the kind that takes years to develop in the heartwood of the Aquilaria tree. The dates arrive within the first hour, their sweetness emerging alongside the oud's deepening profile, adding dimension without apology. Then comes a phase where the composition takes on leather-like warmth, the balsamic quality of the base notes becoming more apparent as the top sweetness begins to settle. By hour three, the warmth of the base becomes the dominant presence, creating a close, intimate trail that clings gently to the skin.
Cultural impact
The Oud Caravan series occupies a specific space in the fragrance world: for those who seek out oud in its most expressive form, willing to engage with the material on its own terms. It's not designed to please everyone, and it doesn't pretend to be. The house maintains an approach that prioritizes the integrity of their materials over broad appeal, creating fragrances that speak clearly to those whose tastes align with their vision. Each release in the series addresses a particular facet of oud, exploring different aspects of what makes the material compelling.
