The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Named after the Norse god of mischief, Loki the fragrance embodies the same principle: nothing is quite what it seems. Aaron Terence Hughes designed this in 2023 as a bright citrus opening that catches attention, with something deeper and more complex warming beneath the surface. The idea was to create a fragrance that invites exploration. Spray it once and you'll think you understand it. Come back a few hours later and you'll realize you were wrong. The name invites that discovery. Like the god himself, this scent reveals more when you think you've figured it out.
What makes Loki structurally interesting is the arrangement of its materials. Most warm, spicy fragrances load the heart with complexity. Here, the heart features amber and tonka bean doing quiet, heavy lifting. The complexity lives in the base: eight materials including Thai oud, frankincense, clove, oakmoss, vetiver, cedarwood, vanilla, and patchouli. That's an unusually long list for the foundation. Thai oud and vetiver anchor the whole thing with a resinous earthiness that works alongside the vanilla and patchouli.
The evolution
The scent opens bright, almost playful. Lemon and nutmeg make it sparkle, a quick, citrus flash that announces itself without trying too hard. The amber arrives and shifts the entire mood. Suddenly it's less about the brightness and more about what builds underneath. Cedarwood and oud emerge, dry and assertive, adding depth to the warmth. The tonka and vanilla take over the foreground while the vetiver, oakmoss, and clove resin hold the base. The final drydown is intimate, a warm, quiet whisper that stays close to the skin.
Cultural impact
Loki occupies a space that appeals to serious fragrance collectors. It's the kind of fragrance that earns comparisons to PAG's Layton, warm, spicy, woody, with a more layered drydown and a longer arc. The 2023 launch arrived at a time when educated fragrance buyers were exploring independent perfumers with stronger points of view. Aaron Hughes connected with that audience through educational content and a direct-to-consumer approach. Loki is the fragrance that represents that connection.
