The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
100BON's brief has always been straightforward: natural materials, nothing synthetic, nothing hidden. In 2017 the house turned to Robertet to build something in the woody-oriental register, a challenging combination because oriental warmth so often depends on synthetic fixatives that the brand's philosophy explicitly rejects. The solution was amyris and papyrus: two natural materials with enough resinous depth to anchor the composition without reaching for lab-made longevity boosters. Oud wood, already one of perfumery's most primal natural materials, gave the name its gravity.
What makes this pairing unusual is the contradiction it sets up. Oud wood is dense, almost solemn, resin harvested from infected agarwood, with centuries of sacred use behind it. Amyris is lighter, sweeter, sometimes called 'West Indian sandalwood' though it shares no botanical relation. Putting them beside each other is the perfumer's way of saying: warmth doesn't have to mean heaviness. The pink pepper and bergamot in the top lift the composition before it can settle into something predictable. The geranium and ylang-ylang keep the heart floral rather than purely resinous, a choice that keeps the whole thing approachable for a fragrance with oriental ambitions.
The evolution
The opening is brief but deliberate. Bergamot and pink pepper arrive together, the pepper slightly sharper, the bergamot clean and citrus-adjacent. Within minutes the thyme emerges, herbal, slightly bitter, pulling the composition away from any sweetness that might be building. The geranium and ylang-ylang arrive around the 15-minute mark and stay for a long time, turning the character from spicy to floral-woody. This is the fragrance's most legible phase: warm, slightly sweet, unmistakably natural. The base arrives gradually around the 90-minute mark. Amyris and cedarwood anchor the composition, while guaiac wood and papyrus introduce a smoky, dry quality, slightly tarry, like woodsmoke caught at a distance. On fabric, this phase lasts well into the evening. On skin, plan for a reapplication if you need it past the four-hour mark.
Cultural impact
Oud Wood & Amyris occupies an interesting position in 100BON's catalogue: it was among the house's earlier compositions, released in 2017 alongside the founding collection, which means it predates many of the brand's more recent explorations in green and fruity territory. Wearers describe it as the house's most classically oriental offering, a composition that draws on ancient perfumery vocabulary while remaining faithful to 100BON's commitment to natural materials. The moderate sillage and moderate longevity are consistent with what the brand has offered across its range, and some wearers interpret this restraint as elegance rather than weakness.
