The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Till Sunrise landed in 2021 as part of Zara's Night Collection, a series aimed at after-hours moods rather than the obvious daytime fare the brand usually leans into. The brief seems to have been capturing the hour just before dawn, when the air still smells cold and green but the warmth underneath has already started its slow turn. Not a nightclub scent. Something quieter, closer to the walk home. Three materials carry the composition with no padding around them: galbanum at the top, cypress through the heart, tonka anchoring the base. Each one pulls its weight, and none of them hide behind the others. The opening reads cold and sharp, almost mineral, the way concrete smells after a long rain.
What's interesting here is the restraint. Till Sunrise goes the other direction from what you might expect. Galbanum is a divisive raw material, sharp, almost rubbery in high doses, the kind of green that splits opinion. Fronting the entire composition with it is a choice, and it pays off. Cypress in the middle does the heavy lifting for continuity, carrying that resinous thread without softening it. Then tonka at the base anchors the greens so they don't float away. The structure is simple on paper. On skin, it reads as confident. The dry-down is where this one shifts gears.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are galbanum doing what galbanum does. Bright, sharp, a little aggressive, like biting into a fresh stem. There's a green pungency here that some people find bracing and others find harsh. It pulls back within the first half hour as cypress enters from underneath, softer than the opening but still distinctly coniferous, carrying a dry resin note that doesn't read as sweet. By the one-hour mark the composition has settled into its middle register: green-woody, slightly aromatic, with a faint medicinal clarity that traces back to the galbanum but no longer dominates. Around the second hour the tonka starts to surface. It doesn't announce itself the way tonka does in an oriental composition. It just warms the back of the fragrance, adds a creaminess under the wood, and keeps the whole thing from drying out. After four hours or so the cypress is mostly gone and what's left is tonka and a ghost of galbanum resin. Close to skin. Intimate projection by this point, detectable but not projecting.
Cultural impact
Till Sunrise sits within Zara's Night Collection, a grouping that places it among evening-coded compositions rather than the lighter daytime releases the brand is often associated with. The green-woody profile gives it a different posture from typical Zara releases, leaning resinous and grown-up rather than sweet or generic. That's part of what makes it stand out on the shelf. On skin, the galbanum-cypress-tonka triangle reads as composed and intentional, more like a deliberate choice than a casual spray. The opening is bright and sharp, almost metallic in its clarity, the galbanum announcing itself without apology.
