The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
La Superba Rossa takes its name from a star in the constellation Canes Venatici, the Hunting Dogs. Paolo Terenzi composed La Superba Rossa in 2018 as a fragrance named after something ancient, celestial, and proud, a perfume that would match that scale. The result is an extraits de parfum built on a deceptively simple structure: honey, rose, amber. But simplicity at this concentration is its own kind of ambition. The honey provides a deep, golden richness that anchors the opening. The rose lends its floral, slightly green character in the heart. The amber wraps everything in warm, resinous depth that lingers on the skin. Each element serves a purpose, and together they create something that feels both grand and intimate at once.
What makes this composition stand apart is the restraint within the richness. Honey at extrait strength could easily tip into syrup, into sticky territory. Here, herbaceous notes lift it, a green, almost medicinal freshness that keeps the sweetness honest rather than indulgent. May rose anchors the heart without becoming the powdery rose of a thousand flankers. It arrives green-stemmed and alive, present without overwhelming. Amber in the base doesn't disappear, it wraps close, holds warmth against skin, and extends the wear into something that lingers at the edges rather than filling the room. The structure is classical but the execution is specific: honey-rose-amber as a statement, not a template.
The evolution
Honey arrives first, not the sharp citrus honey of the opener, but something deeper. Golden, almost resinous. The herbal notes arrive simultaneously, a green counterweight that keeps the sweetness grounded. For a while, this is a balancing act: warm and fresh, sweet and green. Then the rose takes over. May rose doesn't announce itself, it settles in like someone who's always been there. The petals are present but the stems are what you notice: clean, green, alive. The amber builds underneath, wrapping the rose in something resinous and warm. As the composition develops, the honey and herbs begin to recede. The amber-rose remains, intimate and close. This is when La Superba Rossa becomes a skin scent, felt more than smelled, present in the warmth of a room rather than announced upon entry. The drydown stretches into evening: a soft amber warmth with the ghost of rose at the edges.
Cultural impact
Exclusive to Harrods since 2018, La Superba Rossa occupies a specific position: the honey-rose-amber trio executed at extrait strength. The fragrance hasn't dated, its simplicity at high concentration feels deliberate rather than basic. This is a perfume built for those who appreciate concentrated artistry, where intensity and intimacy coexist. The structure reveals itself slowly, rewarding patience with a warmth that stays close to the skin.
