The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
City Oud grew from The Rising Phoenix Perfumery's 2015 ambition to merge Western perfumery with Gulf attar traditions. Perfumer Joseph DeLapp, known as JK DeLapp, had already built a reputation for the house’s early blends of Gulf woods and roses using Western techniques. For this release, DeLapp turned away from the typical citrus or aldehyde opening, instead allowing rose, sandalwood, tonka bean, and oud to appear immediately. The Denver brand draws on the city’s high‑altitude air and cosmopolitan vibe to inspire a scent that feels both crisp and smoky. By omitting a top note, City Oud signals a modern urban character, inviting the wearer to experience a fragrance that feels immediate, warm, and rooted in the traditions of oud. The result is a quiet confidence that balances floral softness with resinous depth, offering approachable luxury.
The note selection for City Oud reflects a deliberately minimal structure, letting rose, sandalwood, tonka bean, and oud speak for themselves. Rose provides a soft floral anchor that invites the wearer into the scent, while sandalwood adds a creamy, supportive wood that smooths the sometimes harsh edges of oud. Tonka bean adds a whisper of sweet, vanilla‑like nuance that creates a gentle contrast to the smoky depth of oud. By omitting any top note, the composition emphasizes continuity and avoids the fleeting citrus bursts that can overshadow the core.
The evolution
City Oud begins its life on skin without any formal preamble, stepping straight into a heart of rose, sandalwood, tonka bean, and oud. The rose opens with a delicate, sweet blush that intertwines with the creamy wood of sandalwood, creating an immediate impression of warm floral‑wood. As the scent settles, the tonka bean adds subtle vanilla‑like sweetness that tempers the deeper, smoky resin of oud, giving the heart a balanced, romantic feel. Over the next few hours, rose and sandalwood recede, allowing the oud‑tonka pairing to dominate the drydown. The lingering phase is Intimate, projecting a low sillage close to the skin and offering a comforting, warm trail of resinous wood. This progression lets City Oud move from gentle floral bloom to deep, smoky finish while maintaining a cohesive, modern character and a subtle hint of urban sophistication.
Cultural impact
Since its 2015 debut, City Oud has become a reference point for modern oud lovers seeking a Western‑crafted take on Arabian tradition. Online forums note its balanced rose heart as a bridge between masculine depth and feminine softness, earning it a loyal niche following among collectors who appreciate its restrained yet animalic character.
