The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Nue Co. launched its Functional Fragrance line in 2019, built on the premise that scent can support emotional wellbeing. Us follows that mission into something more personal. Perfumer Christine Hassan designed this fragrance around the idea of blending, not projecting, not replacing, but working with what your skin already carries. The name isn't a label. It's the point. Us isn't about one person wearing a fragrance. It's about what happens when that fragrance becomes part of the conversation between two people. Launched in 2025, it joins a line that has consistently asked fragrance to do more than smell good, to feel like something, to mean something, to matter in a way that goes beyond the bottle.
The note structure makes this clear from the start. Bergamot and orange open bright and accessible, citrus that doesn't demand attention. Then the heart shifts. Orris root brings a powdery violet quality that's quietly sophisticated, while cedar and moss add green, aromatic depth. The combination creates something that feels both fresh and grounded, clean but not clinical. What makes Us distinctive is the base. Amberwood and vetiver provide warmth and earthiness, but it's the musk that does the real work here, creating that skin-like quality that makes the fragrance feel less applied and more inhabited.
The evolution
The opening hits bright. Bergamot, orange, and pear arrive together in a citrus burst that's fresh and immediately appealing, no waiting, no teasing. It's the kind of start that makes you lean in. Within the first hour, the fruit note softens as the orris root moves forward. The powdery, violet-like quality of iris takes over the conversation, with cedar adding structure underneath. It becomes quieter, more intimate. By the second hour, you're into the base. Amberwood and vetiver create a warm, earthy foundation while the musk keeps everything close to the skin. This is where the fragrance reveals its actual purpose, not a performance piece, but something that exists at arm's length, maybe closer. The drydown on skin can last into the next day, a faint trace of cedar and musk that smells like the version of you that wore this. On fabric, expect moderate sillage, noticeable to someone hugging you, invisible across a table.
Cultural impact
Us joins a category of fragrances built around intimacy and skin-like presence. Peers in this space include Juliette Has a Gun Ode to Dullness, Glossier You, and Le Labo Another 13, scents that prioritize closeness over projection. It's well-suited for office environments, daily wear, cooler seasons, and anyone who's tired of fragrances that announce themselves before they've arrived.
