The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Zest landed in 2020 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, a line that takes the jolt of blood orange and coffee, the cooling slap of mint, the slow-build warmth of tonka and vanilla, and rebuilds them from the ground up. The brief here was clear: combine those high-impact notes into a single wearable composition without losing any of their individual character. The Dua Brand has released Zest as one of the more ambitious entries in the catalog, and it's inspired by Mugler's A*Men Ultra Zest, but the house's version leans into its own personality rather than serving as a straight photocopy. What separates Zest from a typical gourmand-leaning flanker is how it handles its citrus-to-spice transition.
What makes Zest interesting is the balance between its top and heart. Blood orange and coffee are both loud, attention-seeking materials, and placing them in the same opening creates a layered collision that demands attention. Add mint to the mix, and you have three notes that want to be the star. The trick is the middle layer: tonka bean and vanilla cushion the collision, while black pepper, ginger, and cinnamon add a slow heat that keeps the citrus from feeling like a one-note gimmick.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are a riot. Blood orange hits first, sharp and almost synthetic in its brightness, then coffee slides underneath with a bitter edge that reads more like espresso than brewed pot. Mint shows up early, cold and clean, almost mentholated. It's a lot, and it's meant to be. By the thirty-minute mark, the orange mellows and the spices step forward: ginger first, then black pepper, then cinnamon warming the edges. Tonka and vanilla arrive around the two-hour mark, softening the spice into something rounder, almost gourmand. The coffee fades slowly, leaving behind a warm sweetness that holds close to the skin through the rest of the wear. The drydown settles into a vanilla-patchouli blend, quieter than the opening but still present, still identifiable.
Cultural impact
Zest sits comfortably among the bolder compositions in The Dua Brand's catalog, and it's the kind of release that draws a reaction. It wears like a statement: bright, sweet, spiced, and unapologetic about projecting. The kind of scent that draws compliments from strangers and second-guesses from minimalists. There's a reason fragrances built around blood orange and coffee keep gaining traction: they offer a freshness that has actual backbone, a brightness that doesn't evaporate within the first hour.
