The beginning
Unbreakable Vow of Chypre X launched in 2021 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Hybrid collection, a line that takes recognizable olfactory blueprints and reshapes them with broader ambition. Where a single rose might anchor a standard chypre, this composition pulls in two: Bulgarian rose and Rose de Mai, each adding a different shade of floral depth. Aldehydes lift the whole thing with that vintage soapy sparkle, catching light off the top notes like polished glass. The chypré genre has lived many lives, evolving through decades of shifting tastes and reformulations, and this hybrid adds another chapter. Bergamot opens the front door, aldehydes polish the hinges, and somewhere past the florals, civet waits.
Chypré means Cyprus. The name carries the weight of an island and a tradition built on a mossy, woody, citrusy architecture that shaped generations of fine perfumery. What makes this hybrid unusual is the sheer scale of its ingredient list. Two roses, multiple animalics including civet and castoreum, aldehydes, and a base of oakmoss, patchouli, and cypriol do the heavy structural work. Every category of the chypre vocabulary shows up here, and none of them whisper. The mossy floor, the animalic warmth, the floral heart, the citrus lift, each one is given room to speak.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are almost distractingly clean. Aldehydes sparkle over bergamot and green apple like soda bubbles in a tall glass, sharp and bright and almost mischievous in their lift. Then something denser starts to rise. Bulgarian rose and Turkish rose show up together, not as guests but as co-conspirators, pulling ylang-ylang and tuberose into a white floral heart that gets richer by the hour. The roses trade turns, one brighter and more jammy, the other deeper and slightly honeyed, and together they turn the composition toward something warmer. The transition into the base takes its time, and that's part of the pleasure. Patchouli arrives first, dry and earthy, grounding the florals with its green-brown weight. Then oakmoss settles underneath, damp and forest-floor quiet, the structural pillar the whole chypre rests on.
