The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Dua Brand has built its reputation on a single premise: take the architecture of luxury compositions and rebuild them without the markup. The Poem, released in 2023, comes from perfumer Mahsam Raza's workshop in Los Angeles. This one leans into the Inspired Expression collection. The Poem draws from the same territory as Creed's Carmina, a composition centered on black cherry, saffron, and resinous warmth, though the project stands on its own terms rather than as a direct copy. What emerges is a composition that holds its saffron-rose tension with a drydown that carries notable weight and presence. The result reads familiar without ever feeling like a knockoff, a careful study of how cherry and saffron can coexist in a modern oriental structure.
What makes The Poem interesting is the structural choice to lead with black cherry and saffron rather than a conventional citrus or floral opener. Cherry in fine fragrance rarely behaves like the fruit itself. It reads as sweet, faintly medicinal, sometimes boozy, and here it leans into the confectionery register without tipping into gourmand territory. Saffron does the heavy lifting in the opening, giving the composition a leathery, almost cured quality that anchors the sweetness and prevents it from floating away.
The evolution
On skin, The Poem opens with a tart black cherry hit sharpened by saffron's leather-edged spice. Within fifteen minutes, the fruit recedes and the saffron takes over, drier now, more textured, pulling the composition toward something smoked and serious. By the thirty-minute mark, the rose and violet have settled in, but they never behave like a traditional floral heart. The cashmere wood and frankincense underneath keep everything muted, almost dusty. The myrrh arrives quietly in the background, adding a resinous bitterness that holds the sweetness in check. Through hours two and three, the composition keeps shifting, never settling into one static mode. The base arrives late: amber and musk, close to skin, warming rather than projecting. Six hours in, what's left is a soft, spiced warmth with the faintest trace of cherry still clinging to your collar. It wears long but quietly.
Cultural impact
The cherry-and-saffron pairing gives The Poem a specific character, an uncommon combination in modern fragrance that reads as deliberate and considered. The composition treats its inspiration as a starting point rather than a blueprint, allowing the formula to develop its own identity through note choices and structural decisions. The frankincense and myrrh at the heart lend a contemplative weight that sets it apart from lighter cherry-forward releases, while the cashmere wood and amber base give it a lasting presence on skin.
