The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Red & Black Berries launched in 2025 as part of The Dua Brand's Designer Line, and the brief reads like a dare: can you make raspberry and blackberry feel grown up? Perfumer Mahsam Raza took the assignment and built something that doesn't lean on the berries to do all the work. The sweetness has structure underneath it, a creamy wooden architecture that keeps the fruit from sliding into candy territory. It's a short, deliberate composition, an arrangement that keeps its focus tight instead of wandering through ingredient sprawl. The berries sit up front and return in soft echoes through the heart, the vanilla orchid lends a gentle warmth, and a sandalwood and cashmere wood base does the heavy lifting once the fruit fades.
What's interesting here is the absence. No gourmand sugar rush, no syrupy caramel scaffolding, no musky haze to blur the edges. The vanilla orchid is a floral, not a dessert note, which means it adds warmth without tipping the composition into confectionery. That single choice keeps the whole thing in the daylight zone, sweet but not sticky, indulgent but not heavy. The sandalwood in the base lends a creamy continuity that most fruity compositions lose after the first hour, smoothing the transition from bright fruit to soft skin scent.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are all fruit, ripe and slightly jammy, the kind of raspberry and blackberry moment that smells like a crumble still in the oven. Then the vanilla orchid arrives, not as sugar but as a soft floral cream, and the berries start to settle into something more composed. By the second hour the sandalwood has taken over, lending a smooth, almost milky quality to what started as pure fruit. The drydown is where this earns its keep: cashmere wood and sandalwood hold their ground on skin, warm and close, with just a trace of the original berry brightness still flickering underneath. The woods anchor the composition while the fruit fades into a soft memory, and what remains reads as comfort rather than statement. The opening is a hello. The drydown is a stay.
Cultural impact
Red & Black Berries sits in a category all its own, drawing on the warm sweetness of a berry composition while keeping its feet firmly on the ground. It's the kind of scent that wears well across settings, casual enough for the daytime and rich enough to carry into the evening without feeling out of place. The vanilla orchid softens the fruit without burying it, and that balance is part of what makes it so wearable across seasons and moods. For someone craving that sweet spot between fruity brightness and warm woods, this lands in a comfortable middle ground, generous but never overwhelming, indulgent but never heavy.
