The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mahsam Raza composed Mr. Wood for The Dua Brand's Designer Line in 2023, building it around a layered take on the woody genre. Cedar, sandalwood, and patchouli form a wide aromatic base, then fold in coriander, ginger, nutmeg, and mint to keep the warmth from going static. The interplay between these materials produces something that reads less like a single timber and more like a full forest tableau. Resin still clings to the air, bark textures come through in the drydown, and there's enough aromatic width that the composition never feels narrow. Elemi lifts the top with a peppery snap, while frankincense anchors the deeper notes with its churchy, almost meditative quality. The result is a fragrance that earns its woody label through sheer density rather than restraint.
What separates this composition from the usual woody template is the sheer breadth of its note list. Jasmine, rose, vetiver, labdanum, amber, musk, and incense weave through the heart alongside the spices, creating a layered aromatic architecture rather than a linear pour. Campari injects a bitter-herbal edge that keeps the warmer notes from collapsing into sweetness. The elemi resin and frankincense do the heavy lifting in the base, giving the drydown a resinous glow that holds well into the later hours.
The evolution
The opening belongs to elemi and Campari, bright and slightly bitter, like crushed herbs over fresh-cut wood. Mint lifts through the first phase without ever cooling it, while coriander adds a green-peppery crackle that sharpens the whole accord. As the composition breathes, the warmth arrives when ginger, nutmeg, and labdanum settle into the cedar-sandalwood core. Jasmine and rose peek through briefly, adding a floral softness that never overstays its welcome. The drydown is where Mr. Wood earns its name: patchouli, amber, musk, moss, tonka, and frankincense fuse into a dense, resinous base that stays present on skin for hours. Each stage shifts gradually, with the resins warming up and the woods deepening into something that feels both ancient and freshly turned.
Cultural impact
Mr. Wood arrives at a moment when woody compositions have reclaimed significant shelf space, and its blend of resinous depth with fresh, herbaceous elements gives it range across occasions. The fragrance reads comfortably in casual settings yet carries enough weight for evening wear, making it a flexible addition to a rotation. Its note architecture borrows from the broader woody canon, drawing on cedar, sandalwood, patchouli, and resinous materials to build a composition that feels familiar in structure while remaining distinct in execution.
