The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
From The Ashes arrived in 2022 as a tribute to Keith Urban's discontinued Phoenix, a fragrance that exists now mostly in the memories of those who wore it and in the bottles that changed hands long after it left shelves. The Dua Brand has carved out a corner of the fragrance world with compositions inspired by celebrated scents, and From The Ashes is among the most personal of those homages, an Extrait de Parfum that translates the original's mood into something newly wearable. The result is a fragrance that borrows Phoenix's silhouette and dresses it in a different cut, keeping the spine of the original intact while letting the details shift.
What makes the composition worth attention is the placement of Mexican chocolate among the listed notes, where it interacts with Canadian balsam and tonka bean to create an unexpected gravitational pull. The chocolate reads dark and unsweetened, more like a roasted nib than a confection, and it brings a warmth that the cooler resinous facets of the balsam can't quite tame. Suede and cognac handle the entrance, that polished, slightly formal opening that announces itself with confidence.
The evolution
The opening belongs to suede and cognac, a polished handshake that smells like expensive leather goods and a pour you didn't have to ask for. Blackberry flickers at the edges, bright and brief, there to keep things from settling into something too serious. Then the chocolate arrives, not sweet, not gourmand, just deeply warm, folding into the cognac until you can't tell where one ends and the other begins. Canadian balsam grounds the whole thing with a resinous, almost meditative quality, the way a tree's heartwood smells when you press your nose to it. As the hours pass, the suede and cognac recede into a softer register, the cognac losing its boozy sharpness and turning into a mellow warmth that sits close to the skin. The chocolate becomes the dominant voice, rich and faintly bittersweet, and the balsam weaves through everything like a thread holding the composition in place.
Cultural impact
From The Ashes steps into a conversation that has been simmering among fragrance collectors for years, the one about what happens when a beloved composition leaves the market and the people who wore it keep looking for a way back. Keith Urban's Phoenix developed its own following during its run, and once it was discontinued, that following didn't simply disappear. Collectors traded bottles, forums kept the discussion alive, and the demand for something in that vein persisted long after the original stopped being produced.
