The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Fig & Vanilla arrived in 2023 as a contemporary interpretation of Lesquendieu's Feu de Bengale, a heritage house revived in 2016 with a lineage dating back to 1903. The Dua Brand saw fig and vanilla as an unresolved tension worth exploring. Fig brings a cool, almost mineral milk quality; vanilla brings warmth that never argues. Together they create something that feels neither fully gourmand nor fully floral, sitting instead in that powdery middle ground where iris and tolu balsam do their quiet work. The goal was a fragrance that smelled like a memory of warmth rather than a declaration of it. The name says everything: no pretense, just the pairing that drives the composition.
The powder accord is where this fragrance earns its structure. Tonka bean and iris together create a violet-dust effect that keeps the sweet notes from cloying, pulling the fig and vanilla into something cleaner, more composed. Tolu balsam adds a sticky, balsamic warmth beneath, and davana contributes a faintly herbal counterpoint that prevents the whole thing from going flat. The result is a composition that feels both grounded and lifted: warm where it needs to be warm, powdery where it needs to be powdery, and never quite what you'd expect from a name this simple.
The evolution
The opening announces itself with Mandarin Orange cutting bright and clean, citrus with a quick bite. Beneath it, Almond adds a warm, edible nuttiness that keeps the citrus from feeling too sharp. It's present for the first 15 minutes, then retreats. At the 15-minute mark, Fig takes over completely. The milk note arrives first, watery, slightly green, like the sap at the base of a cut stem. Then it deepens into something darker, more resinous. The Vanilla doesn't compete. It arrives quietly, adding warmth without sweetness overload. A whisper of Rose stays in the background, you'll find it only if you're looking for it. Once Fig begins to fade, Iris emerges with its clean, powdery violet-dust quality. Not the flower, its shadow. Tolu Balsam contributes sticky warmth beneath. This is the heart of the fragrance: warm, powdery, intimate. The sillage stays close throughout. The drydown is all skin. Tonka Bean and Musk blend into something skin-close and long-lasting. Vanilla threads through for 6-8 hours. The tolus and iris keep their powdery presence alive.
Cultural impact
Fig & Vanilla fits squarely into Dua's accessible-luxury positioning: quality that doesn't require a trust fund to explore. The fig-vanilla combination has proven polarizing in the best way, divisive enough to feel distinctive, warm enough to win most people over. The powdery iris finish gives it an elegance that elevates it beyond simple gourmand territory.
