The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The word mukhallat means "mix" in Arabic, and the second entry in The Dua Brand's Mukhallat Series takes that premise to its logical conclusion. Launched in 2022 as part of the house's Original Blend Collection, the fragrance is an exercise in accumulation, stacking twenty-four distinct materials into a single composition rather than editing them down. The brand's own description frames it as a sweet, woodsy, and smoky creation. Where the concept lives or dies is in the execution, and the decision to layer this many ingredients at once is either bold or excessive depending on who's wearing it. There's a certain audacity in refusing to pare things back, in offering a single bottle that contains green herbs, animalic warmth, classical florals, gourmand sweetness, and smoky woods all at once.
What's interesting here is the sheer range of materials on the table. The composition pulls from almost every corner of perfumery: green herbs like tarragon, traditional Middle Eastern anchors like oud and civet, classical florals from rose to tuberose to carnation, and gourmand warmth from tonka and honey. With twenty-four listed notes, the challenge is orchestration, since each ingredient competes for attention and the margin for error narrows with every addition.
The evolution
The opening hits fast and doesn't ease you in. Bergamot and lemon cut through first, bright and astringent, but they're quickly swallowed by something far denser. Within minutes the oud arrives, deep and resinous, layered against civet that adds an unmistakable animal warmth. This isn't a polite opening. It announces. The heart phase is where the full weight of the composition becomes clear. Orange blossom, jasmine, rose, and tuberose crowd together, each trying to be heard, while honey and tonka bean sweeten the edges. Patchouli and sandalwood ground everything from below, keeping the florals from floating away. There's no single dominant flower here. It's a wall of them, a dense bouquet where individual stems blur into a single impression of floral intensity.
Cultural impact
The Mukhallat Series represents the brand's most material-heavy blending work, and the second entry is built around 24 listed notes, more than the typical single-profile release. The category it occupies is dense, multi-family compositions, blending green herbs, animalic warmth, florals, gourmands, and woods into a single bottle. The extrait concentration supports the format, giving the numerous materials enough presence to register on skin over a full day of wear.
