The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Door to the Bay launched in 2022 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression line. This one takes its cues from Diptyque's Oyédo, the 2000 release that turned Japanese yuzu into a luxury statement. The Dua Brand built their own version, kept the yuzu tartness and the herbal backbone intact, and put it in a 30 ml extrait bottle. The fragrance that emerges is a citrus aromatic composition with real character, a structure where the brightness of yuzu meets the savory pull of thyme before settling into something warm and woody. The result is a scent that reads as intentional from the first spritz. There's nothing accidental about how the notes stack or how the drydown settles.
What makes the composition work isn't the volume of notes. It's the restraint. Four citrus elements at the top, lemon, lime, mandarin, and yuzu, create a layered brightness that gives the opening dimension. Thyme sits at the heart as the only bridge between the bright opening and the woodsy base, a single aromatic note carrying the transition alone. The woody base is deliberately vague, sourced notes rather than a named material like sandalwood or cedar, which lets it function as a neutral stage for the citrus to settle onto.
The evolution
The opening hits fast. Lemon and lime are already at full volume, sparkling and almost carbonated, the kind of brightness that reads as cold air rather than fruit. Yuzu shows up alongside them, slightly more tart, giving the citrus stack an unusual accent that keeps it from smelling like a cleaning product. Mandarin orange rounds out the sharpness with a softer sweetness underneath. Soon after, thyme arrives. It doesn't replace the citrus, it interrupts it, adding an herbal, almost savory edge that makes the opening feel like something you'd find in a kitchen garden rather than a perfume counter. The transition into the base is gradual. Woody notes don't announce themselves. They simply absorb the brightness, pulling it down from sharp to mellow over the long stretch of the wear. What remains is a dry, slightly warm woodiness with traces of citrus still clinging to it.
Cultural impact
Door to the Bay carries an unmistakable connection to Diptyque's Oyédo, giving it a reference point in the niche world of yuzu-forward compositions. That lineage matters because Oyédo helped establish the citrus aromatic as a serious fragrance category rather than just a summer fling. Door to the Bay steps into that same territory with its own interpretation, keeping the yuzu tartness intact while adding a herbal depth that gives it presence beyond the opening spritz. The appeal is straightforward: citrus that actually lasts, with enough herbal character to keep it interesting past the first hour.
