The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Mukhallat series is The Dua Brand's exploration of classic Arabic-inspired perfumery, where mukhallat compositions meet the house's signature approach of building complex compositions from accessible ingredients. Series 004 arrived in 2022 as the fourth installment in this collection, offering a distinctive take on the floral-resinous profile that defines the release. The brand called it out as one of the strongest and most exotic entries in the line, built around jasmine, galbanum, tuberose, resins, and patchouli. Released as an extrait de parfum, it carries a concentration that signals intent, not subtlety. The juice itself has presence from the first spray, a dense and almost syrupy opening where the resins sit close to the skin.
What makes Series 004 distinctive is the sheer density of its composition: fifteen named materials across the pyramid, from sharp aldehydes to deep resinous bases, with florals stacked between green galbanum and earthy patchouli. This blend works the same way on skin, each accord catching a different moment. The galbanum brings a sharp, almost bitter greenness that slices through the sweetness of the florals and stops the whole thing from going syrupy.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes are loud and unmistakable. Aldehydes spark up bright and almost metallic, layered over galbanum's sharp green bitterness and the fizzy brightness of saffron. It reads soapy-cold at first, the way aldehydes do, before the florals start to surface. Tuberose comes in creamy and dense, jasmine adding a darker sweetness beside it, while clove and the warm spices build underneath. This is the phase that smells most like a classic perfume, aldehydic, floral, with that vintage cologne lift. Around the ninety-minute mark the resins arrive, pulling everything downward into amber territory. The orris root turns powdery, violet adds a soft coolness, and the sandalwood starts to ground the composition. By hour three the green has mostly burned off. What remains is warm amber, oakmoss, sandalwood, and a persistent trail of musk and resins. The patchouli deepens into something almost mineral.
Cultural impact
Within The Dua Brand's catalog, the Mukhallat series represents a more traditional streak, compositions that lean into dense, layered constructions rather than lighter, more straightforward releases. Series 004 fits that lane with its galbanum-heavy greenness and dense resinous base, notes that sit at the heart of the composition and give the fragrance much of its character. It appeals to wearers who already know they want something complex and are looking for that specific green-floral-resinous territory in a wearable format. The blend doesn't pull punches.
