The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Diamond Cut No. 2 arrived in 2023 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection. The composition takes its brief into white petals and zest, landing in a citrus floral register that reads more like sunlight through sheer curtains than a dressed-up showcase. The neroli and petitgrain open with a brightness that feels cut from something living, while the orange blossom settles in just behind, soft and golden. There's a clarity to the top that doesn't shout, the kind of freshness that arrives before you've registered you're wearing anything at all. Underneath that early brightness, a peony note begins to unfurl, pillowy and faintly cool, and the Sichuan pepper waits in the heart to give it texture.
What's interesting here is how the spiciest note in the pyramid, Sichuan pepper, is buried in the heart rather than planted at the top. This one waits. It lets neroli and petitgrain do the brightness, and then once the orange blossom is established, the pepper arrives not as fire but as a tingling texture under the florals. It changes what peony smells like in the formula, giving the softness a slight buzz, almost the way a cool breeze moves through a warm room. You smell the florals first, and only later do you notice the faint electric hum running underneath them.
The evolution
The first 20 minutes are mostly neroli, petitgrain, and orange blossom working together, sharp at the edges and softly sweet underneath, like zest squeezed over a bowl of petals. There's a bright green bite from the petitgrain that some people read as herbal, others as just very alive, and the neroli carries a kind of soapy elegance that keeps the opening from tipping into anything too sharp. The orange blossom sits between them, neither fully fruity nor fully floral, more honeyed and warm than you'd expect from a top-note position. By the 30 minute mark the Sichuan pepper starts arriving through the orange blossom, not as heat but as a tingling sensation, almost fizzy, that lifts the peony into something more awake than usual. You can feel the pepper before you can name it, this low current that makes the peony pulse slightly.
Cultural impact
Diamond Cut No. 2 is a citrus-floral composition that handles its white petals with unusual restraint, and that's part of what makes it register at all. The Dua Brand's read on the category leans brighter and more peppered than most, and the placement of Sichuan pepper in the heart, rather than as a showy top-note flourish, gives the whole thing a quietly surprising architecture. You smell the orange blossom and neroli first and assume you know where it's going, and then the pepper arrives underneath and shifts the floor.
