The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Dhafar arrived in 2021 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection. Dhafar specifically channels Zafar by Xerjoff, an Oriental Woody known for its confident balance of fruit, florals, and resinous depth. The Dua Brand doesn't hide the inspiration. It's part of the pitch, part of the point. The fragrance presents a green apple and neroli opening that reads crisp and bright, almost cheerful, before the composition pivots toward oud territory. That bright-to-resinous shift gives the scent a built-in sense of movement, as though the opening acts as a gentle lead-in rather than a statement. Pepper stirs in the early phase, adding a low hum of warmth beneath the florals, and rose comes through soft and grounded rather than powdery.
What makes Dhafar interesting from a structural standpoint is the way it opens with something almost playful, green apple and neroli, before pulling toward serious oud territory. The inclusion of frankincense and vetiver adds layers bridging the bright opening to the woody base. It's a composition that rewards patience, designed to unfold rather than announce.
The evolution
The first spray hits with that green apple snap, crisp, almost tart, cushioned by neroli's white floral softness. Pepper stirs underneath, adding a low hum of warmth before the florals rise. As the composition settles, rose and white blossoms take over, sweet but grounded by cedar's dry woodiness. The incense begins threading through, smoky and slightly resinous, and that's when the oud announces itself. Not loud. Not animalic. More like a slow-burning wood fire behind a closed door. As the hours progress, the green apple recedes, the florals quiet, and what remains is oud, vetiver, cedar, and musk in close conversation. The vetiver keeps it earthy and a little raw. The musk softens everything. The later hours are a low, warm hum on skin, woody and slightly sweet, with traces of frankincense that surface when you move.
Cultural impact
Within The Dua Brand's catalog, Dhafar sits in the Inspired Expression collection, where the brand's approach to inspired perfumery meets one of the fragrance world's most recognizable materials. The green apple opening makes the oud feel approachable to someone who might not reach for a traditional resin-dominant composition, and the accessible price tier invites experimentation without the typical commitment of a full bottle of an oud-heavy original. The neroli softens what could otherwise read as heavy or meditative, giving the composition a lift that keeps it wearable in warmer months and more casual settings.
