The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Daylight Drift is a 2026 release from The Dua Brand, part of the house's Inspired Expression collection. Mahsam Raza composed this one with a particular target in mind: a Liis Floating dupe perfume, which means the brief was about capturing something specific. Capture the airy, clean-linen character. Keep the floral weight featherlight. Let the woods whisper instead of announce. The result is a woody floral musk that reads less like an impression and more like a study in restraint. The composition opens with a bergamot lift that cuts through with a cold, almost mineral brightness, the kind of zesty snap that registers before any single note can be named. Beneath that citrus flash, a peach accord softens the edges, lending a gentle warmth that keeps the opening from reading sharp or green.
The interesting tension here is between the peach and the linen. Peach has an inherent lushness, almost a syrup pull if it leans too ripe. Pairing it with linen, a note that smells of just-pressed cotton and clean air, forces the fruit into a cooler register. It becomes skin-warm rather than fruit-bowl. The wild orchid at the heart keeps that temperature steady. Sequoia wood in the base adds a dry, almost papery quality, the kind of grain you find in a sun-warmed barn door. This interplay between fruit and textile creates a kind of olfactory conversation that evolves across the wear.
The evolution
The opening is all about the lift. Bergamot cuts through with a cold, zesty brightness, and the peach blooms underneath it, giving the opening a fizzy, just-bitten quality. There's no syrup, no jam. As the composition develops, the orchid settles in, and the fragrance shifts from sparkling to soft. The wild orchid here doesn't read powdery or indolic. It floats, almost aquatic in its transparency, hovering between the citrus above and the base notes below. As the drydown progresses, the linen begins to surface, bringing that freshly-laundered, almost starched quality, and the sequoia wood arrives underneath, dry and slightly resinous. The peach eventually fades, but the fruit's warmth persists, warming the linen and keeping the base from feeling cold or austere. The late stages are mostly linen and sequoia, with a faint orchid echo that refuses to disappear entirely.
Cultural impact
Daylight Drift draws on a familiar vocabulary in modern perfumery, the combination of bergamot, peach, and clean musks that has become a staple of lightweight, everyday compositions. Bergamot serves as a foundation here, prized for the way it lifts a formula and adds an immediate sense of cleanliness and brightness. The brightness isn't sharp or aggressive; it's a cool, almost sparkling quality that opens the fragrance with energy and clarity. The peach note, by contrast, lends a soft, skin-like warmth that keeps the formula from feeling too sharp or medicinal, contributing to the friendly, approachable mood that defines this style of scent.
