The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Dua Brand launched Cuìr de Mìlano in 2016, stepping into leather territory with a clear reference point. The official line draws a direct line to Memo's Italian Leather, and the name itself leans into that Milanese association. Rather than recreating that reference wholesale, the brand approached it through its own lens. Tomato leaf carries the opening, a choice that pushes the fragrance somewhere greener and more aromatic than a straight-up suede accord would. The composition then folds in myrrh, labdanum, clary sage, and a steady backbone of sandalwood and ambergris. The result reads as a personal translation of Italian leather rather than a copy.
Tomato leaf in a leather composition is the kind of choice that makes the whole thing work. Slipping in a green, slightly bitter, almost vegetal note at the top forces the leather to behave differently. It has to be more supple, less aggressive. The clary sage reinforces that herbaceous quality, adding a cooling, almost savoury counterpoint that keeps the opening from sliding into anything too raw. Myrrh and labdanum provide the resinous warmth that grounds the composition, anchoring the brighter greens with a sticky, amber-like depth.
The evolution
First spray, the tomato leaf is unmistakable. Green, slightly acidic, almost like snapping a stem in a kitchen garden. It sits forward in the early going, projecting clearly enough that anyone within arm's length will catch it. The leather arrives quietly underneath, more suede than bridle, the kind that wraps rather than commands, offering a soft, brushed texture that contrasts the sharper green above it. As the opening recedes, the clary sage comes through, herbaceous and slightly medicinal, lending a clean, almost tea-like quality to the heart. Myrrh starts pulling things warmer at the same time, introducing a quiet incense character that signals the shift from top to middle. The composition settles into its stride as it wears, with labdanum, vanilla, and ambergris taking over and the leather deepening into something more resinous and lived-in.
Cultural impact
Cuìr de Mìlano wears like the answer to a very specific question: can a leather fragrance be green? The tomato leaf opening gives it a recognisable identity within the leather category, and wearers tend to describe it in terms of places and objects rather than notes. Worn jacket. Garden wall. Afternoon light through a window. The clary sage and myrrh in the heart reinforce that sense of place, pulling the composition somewhere between a sunlit courtyard and a quiet study. It's a composition that rewards curiosity over impulse, inviting the wearer to spend time with it rather than judge it in the first few minutes.
