The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Cuìr de Irlandés launched in 2018 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection. The fragrance draws clear inspiration from Memo Paris's Irish Leather, capturing the saddle leather, juniper berry, and orris concrete that define that original's character. The composition is a leather rooted firmly in green-spicy terrain, built on the anchoring materials of birch tar and iris concrete. From the first spray, the birch tar announces itself with a smoky, almost medicinal intensity that frames everything else around it. The iris concrete moves underneath, powdery and cool, lending a mineral weight that keeps the leather from feeling thin or synthetic.
What makes this composition worth a second look is its restraint with leather. Cuìr de Irlandés keeps the leather raw and saddle-toned, then cools it down with juniper berry's green sharpness and sweet vernal grass's hay-like dryness. The orris concrete brings a mineral, almost metallic powderiness that keeps the whole thing from sliding into pure barnyard territory. Birch tar does the real structural work. It's the smoky, leathery, slightly medicinal material that gives the composition its depth and its edge, the reason this reads as countryside rather than cleanroom.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are loud. Juniper berry and pink pepper crackle across the top, sharp and almost fizzy, like cold air hitting warm skin. Clary sage softens the edges quickly, pulling the composition into herbal territory before the leather arrives. The heart settles into something resembling a stable at dawn: saddle leather warmed by body heat, birch tar curling underneath like woodsmoke from a far-off hearth. The orris concrete weaves through everything, giving the iris a dry, rooty quality rather than a powdery floral one. This phase runs deep and unhurried, with the leather and tar trading dominance as the hours pass. As the composition moves into its later stages, the leather begins to recede into something quieter and warmer, taking on an amber-toned closeness where tonka bean absolute takes over with its almond-vanilla softness.
Cultural impact
Cuìr de Irlandés sits within The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection. Its counterpart here is Memo Paris's Irish Leather, the release that established a distinct approach to green, saddle-toned leather in contemporary perfumery. The composition works best for autumn and winter wear, though its green-spicy top keeps it from feeling heavy in transitional weather. There is a particular pleasure in wearing this kind of fragrance when the air turns cold, the birch tar's smokiness echoing distant bonfires while the juniper reads like the last green thing standing before deep winter sets in.
