The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Clear Amara Sea arrived in 2022 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression line, and the reference is unmistakable: this is a reading of Bvlgari Aqva Amara. The citrusy-aquatic structure stays intact, with Sicilian mandarin and neroli handling the bright, sun-warmed opening that pulls you straight to a Mediterranean afternoon. Released in an extrait de parfum concentration and bottled in a 30 ml format, it carries the weight needed to hold its character through a long wear without losing definition. The extrait format gives the composition room to breathe across skin, letting the aquatic notes settle into something deeper and less fleeting than a typical splash-on cologne.
What makes the composition worth a second look is the patchouli choice. The patchouli reads as greener and drier than the typical dank or chocolate-heavy version, carrying an almost earthy bitterness that grounds the aquatic brightness. Paired with frankincense, it gives the fragrance a quiet resinous depth, a soft trace of incense that suggests something older sits beneath the watery surface. The Sicilian mandarin and neroli handle the opening brightness, but the patchouli and resin pairing is what keeps the fragrance from drifting into generic cologne territory.
The evolution
First thirty minutes, the Sicilian mandarin arrives loud and almost candied, the way orange peel tastes sweeter than the fruit inside. Neroli floats just behind it, slightly soapy, slightly floral, giving the opening a warm Mediterranean tilt. Then the water notes arrive, and the whole thing shifts. The citrus doesn't disappear, but it makes room. Patchouli starts threading through, greener and more present than expected, not the dank chocolate version but something that reads like wet stone or warm bark after rain. By the two-hour mark, frankincense surfaces quietly, a faint church-on-the-coast suggestion. The base holds for hours: patchouli, that resinous whisper, and the soft warmth of skin and amber. On clothes the following morning, the neroli resurfaces, ghostlike, while the patchouli stays warm and grounded in the weave of the fabric. The drydown never feels hollow or synthetic.
Cultural impact
Clear Amara Sea occupies a recognizable place in the world of citrus-aquatic fragrances. Its closest reference, Bvlgari Aqva Amara, launched in 2014 and became known for its salty-marine Mediterranean character. This reading takes that same briny personality and translates it through the Inspired Expression lens, offering a summer-leaning citrus aquatic with enough patchouli weight to keep it from drifting into typical fresh-cologne territory. It speaks to a wearer who values the cooling effect of water notes balanced against something earthier and more resinous.
