The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Citrange Verbena is The Dua Brand's 2022 take on Santa Eulalia's Citric, a Spanish composition built around verbena and wormwood rather than the usual lemon-bergamot citrus template. The name borrows from the citrange, a cold-hardy hybrid of citrus and trifoliate orange that pulls together sharp and bitter in the same skin. The Dua version preserves that tension, the push and pull between bright zest and herbal depth, and carries it into a structure that feels deliberate. The verbena reads cooling and almost medicinal at the edges, while the wormwood underneath keeps everything from lifting into straightforward freshness. This is not a bright, easy cologne.
What separates this from a hundred other citrus-aromatic releases is the absinthe wormwood running through the composition. Wormwood brings a bitter, herbal-green quality that most citrus compositions sidestep, and paired with oakmoss in the base, it gives the fragrance a mossy, slightly apothecary weight. The black pepper and cardamom add heat without sweetness, a dry warmth that sits beneath the zest rather than competing with it.
The evolution
The first five minutes are a burst of bergamot, green mandarin, and verbena, cold and zesty, the kind of opening that makes you check your wrist. Lemon comes through quickly, bright and slightly tart, joined by cardamom and black pepper that warm the edges without softening them. Wormwood arrives in the first quarter hour, adding that bitter, herbal undertone that separates this from standard citrus fare. By the two-hour mark the top notes have calmed, and the oakmoss starts to surface, giving the composition a green, earthy base that feels grounded rather than clean. The drydown settles into a mossy, lightly spiced warmth where the verbena and oakmoss trade dominance, the cooling herbal facets giving way slowly to the denser, more rooted materials beneath. The black pepper lingers as a faint smolder, never quite disappearing, while the cardamom softens into something almost woody.
Cultural impact
By anchoring its profile around bergamot, lemon verbena, and green mandarin orange, The Dua Brand positions Citrange Verbena within the citrus-aromatic category, a space that has long offered a different kind of appeal than sweeter, gourmand-driven releases. The wormwood and oakmoss base gives the composition a herbal bitterness that contrasts with the clean, synthetic freshness found in many mainstream designer offerings. Verbena plays a central role here, its cooling, almost medicinal quality pulling the citrus away from the bright and playful territory it usually occupies and into something more contemplative.
